Opposite day
Opposite Day is an unofficial joke date, often listed as 25 January. It is not a public holiday. The reverse-speech game can start on any day you agree to play.
How it works
Unofficial United States lists often print National Opposite Day on 25 January. That listing is a sticker, not a statute. Offices keep ordinary January hours. There is no observed-Monday rule if the 25th is a weekend. 25 January 2026 was a Sunday. The next 25 January is Monday 25 January 2027. From 3 September 2026 that Monday is 144 days away. The date does not close the post.
The same words also name a game. Someone declares that yes means no, come here means stay there, and then tries to trap the room. That game does not need January. A child can call it in July. The January square is for people who want a planner gag after the December feasts. The game is a spoken reverse you opt into for a stretch of talk.
The paradox is the joke, not a scheduling tool. If today is Opposite Day and you say that it is, a pedant will claim you just said it is not. If you say it is not, the same pedant will claim that means it is. You cannot use that loop to move a dentist appointment. You can use it for five minutes and then stop, before homework becomes “the opposite of homework.”
January is a bookmark, not a ministry order
Late January sits after New Year and before February’s own fixed dates. In the north it is still winter. In the south it is summer. The joke date does not care. The weather does. A classroom that marks 25 January is running a gag, not following a closure. A classroom that never mentions it has not missed a required observance. It has missed a sticker.
For the listed unofficial date, mark 25 January. For the game, agree a start and a stop in ordinary language. Keep safety instructions out of the reverse: roads, stoves, fire drills. Do not expect a bank or a government counter to treat the 25th as a feast.
Physical theatre — shoes on the wrong feet, breakfast at supper — is optional. It is also a bad idea around stairs. Reverse the language, not the safety rules. End the game out loud. “Opposite day is over” has to mean what it says, or you never leave the loop. That sincere sentence is the one the game needs.
A holiday page that refuses the reverse
This page will not file Opposite Day beside Christmas or a federal Monday. It will file it with unofficial joke dates: optional, named, unbound. If a party invitation uses 25 January, that host chose the sticker. If a worksheet titled Opposite Day lands in May, the worksheet is a language lesson. Both uses are honest. Only the invitation needs January to be true to the unofficial list.
Keep consent in bounds. “The opposite of look both ways” is not a game. “The opposite of yes” is a game if everyone agreed. That line is the same in January and in August. The coat changes with the season. The instructions that may be jokes do not.
Opposite Day on a sticker is 25 January. Opposite Day in a hallway starts when someone says so, and it had better end the same way.
