How it works

The Orange County Fair is not a single holiday. It is a dated summer occupation of a fairground. Organizers publish a first Friday and a last Sunday. Between those two dates the gates follow a weekly pattern: open Wednesday through Sunday, shut Monday and Tuesday. Count the open days and you get 23. Count every civil date from 17 July through 16 August and you get 31. Both numbers describe the same summer block. One is the show. The other is the fence around the show.

In 2026 the first day was Friday, 17 July. The last day was Sunday, 16 August. The closed pairs were 20–21 July, 27–28 July, 3–4 August, and 10–11 August. Those Mondays and Tuesdays are still on the wall calendar. They are not fair days. If you circled “the fair is on in August” without checking the weekday, you could arrive on a Tuesday to a dark midway.

The site is 88 Fair Drive, Costa Mesa, on Pacific Time. Hours for the 2026 run were 11:00 to 23:00 on Wednesday, Thursday, and Sunday, and 11:00 to midnight on Friday and Saturday. Those are local civil hours, not a separate fair clock. When you leave the county, convert them. The dates do not move with you.

A summer span, not a movable feast

The fair sits in Northern Hemisphere summer. 17 July is well after the June solstice. 16 August is still meteorological summer in the United States, two weeks and a bit before 31 August. The run is a choice of weekends in the hot months, not a solstice and not a harvest moon. Southern California summer is the weather you actually get. The printed dates do not wait for a cooler week.

By Thursday, 3 September 2026, those dates are in the past. “OC Fair dates” in September is a record of the summer just gone, not a countdown. The next year’s first Friday and last Sunday are a later announcement. Until that announcement exists, do not copy 17 July and 16 August onto 2027. Annual events keep the season and change the numerals.

Write the first open day and the last open day, with weekdays attached. Strike every Monday and Tuesday inside that span. Read hours in Pacific Time for Costa Mesa, then convert if you are travelling.

After the last Sunday, treat the run as closed. The fairground can host other events; those are not the fair dates. Ticket prices, ride deals, and concert bills change inside the run and between years. They are not the calendar. The calendar is the 23 open days. If a source disagrees on a price, it is still agreeing on July and August if it names 17 July to 16 August.

The fair borrows 23 summer days and returns the Mondays and Tuesdays unused. Show up on a closed weekday and you will meet the calendar, not the corn dog.

How the week inside the fair behaves

Because Monday and Tuesday are dark, a “week at the fair” is a five-day pulse, Wednesday to Sunday. That is not an ISO week. An ISO week still has seven days. The fair simply declines two of them. Planning a visit “this week” during the run meant: is today one of the five? If today is Monday, the next open morning is Wednesday.

Opening on a Friday and closing on a Sunday also means the first “week” of the fair is short: Friday, Saturday, Sunday, then the first closed pair. The last stretch is a full Wednesday-to-Sunday set ending 16 August. The shape is uneven on purpose. It is built from weekends, not from a wish that every month contain the same number of Fridays.

If you are lining up a trip from outside Orange County, the useful objects are the open dates, the closed weekdays, and the local hours. Theme slogans and midway names decorate the year. They do not move 16 August.
