Number of dates

How many days in between two dates depends on whether you count the end date. Elapsed days skip one end; an inclusive list of dates keeps both. Weeks are groups of seven of those days.

how many days in between two dates

How many days in between two dates is subtraction, then a decision. Take the later civil date minus the earlier one. That difference is the elapsed span: the midnights you cross. From 3 September to 10 September in the same year you cross seven midnights, so seven elapsed days. The list of squares from the 3rd through the 10th is eight dates. “How many dates in this range” wanted eight. “How many days until” usually wanted seven. Say which before you write the number down.

Same-day to same-day is zero elapsed days and one date if you are listing. Overnight to the next morning is one elapsed day. People lose a day here because they count both endpoints and then also subtract, or because they treat a month as four weeks. A month is 28 to 31 days. Four weeks are 28 days. The leftover 1 to 3 days are real.

Clock time can steal another unit if you wanted hours rather than dates. From 3 September 18:00 to 4 September 09:00 is one date-change and 15 hours. A date-only tool will still say one elapsed day. Do not feed a duration question to a date-only tool and then argue with the tool.

Elapsed days: later date minus earlier date. Inclusive dates: elapsed days plus one, when both ends are in the list. Same date twice: zero elapsed, one date on the list. Never assume a month is 28 days unless it is February in a common year.

Leap day is 29 February. Spans that cross it in a leap year contain that extra date. Spans that do not cross February do not care. 2026 is not a leap year. 2028 is. Name the years of both ends before you boast about a round number.

Number of weeks between two dates

Number of week between two dates — the grammar is rough, the arithmetic is not. A week is seven days. Divide elapsed days by seven: whole weeks, then leftover days. From 3 September 2026 to 1 October 2026 is 28 elapsed days, exactly four weeks. From 3 September to 2 October is 29: four weeks and one day. Keep the remainder when pay, notice, or medicine is counted in days.

Matching weekdays — Thursday to Thursday — counts whole week-steps, the same as elapsed days being a multiple of seven. That is “a week away” language. It is not “how many week numbers sit between these dates” on an ISO calendar.

Do not convert two calendar months into eight weeks and stop. Two months in a row run 59 to 62 days, which is eight weeks plus three to six leftover days. If you cannot say whether the last day counts, you do not yet have a number. You have an argument that is waiting for a definition.

Week number with dates

Week number with dates, and week number and dates, are labels on a year grid. Under ISO 8601 a week runs Monday through Sunday. Week 1 contains the year’s first Thursday, which is also the week that contains 4 January. A year has 52 or 53 such weeks. Early January can belong to the previous ISO year; late December can belong to week 1 of the next.

2026 begins on a Thursday, so ISO week 1 of 2026 starts Monday 29 December 2025, and 2026 is a 53-week ISO year. 1 January 2026 is Thursday of week 1. A U.S. style that treats week 1 as the week containing 1 January, often starting Sunday, will print a different number for the same date. If two spreadsheets disagree by one, check the system before you “fix” the data.

Do not divide day-of-year by seven and round: that ignores the Monday start and the Thursday rule. Write the rule beside the number. “Week 36, ISO, 31 August–6 September 2026” can be checked. “Week 36” alone cannot. Subtracting week numbers across a year boundary is not a span: week 52 to week 2 is not “minus fifty.” Count Mondays, or convert both dates to a day count and divide by seven. The week label is a name. The span is still days.

Questions and answers

How many days are in between two dates?
Elapsed days are the later date minus the earlier date. If you need every square listed, add one. Same date is zero elapsed days.
How many weeks are between two dates?
Divide elapsed days by seven. Keep the leftover days. Two months is not eight weeks exactly.
What is a week number with a date?
Under ISO 8601, weeks start Monday and week 1 contains the first Thursday. Other systems number weeks differently. Name the system.
