How many days of a year is 365 in a common year and 366 in a leap year. November’s 30 days are a slice of that total, not a substitute for it. A countdown to “November” without a day of the month is a countdown to the 1st, or it is unfinished. After 30 November the next 1 November is next year. From a December morning you do not count backward to this November unless you asked for “days since.”

To count by hand from early September, take the rest of September after today (27 days after 3 September, through the 30th), add all of October (31), then add the November date you want. 27 + 31 + 1 = 59 for the 1st. 27 + 31 + 22 = 80 for the 22nd. Keep October’s 31 honest. Dropping it to 30 is a September habit that lands you a day late in November.
