How it works

The search sounds like a festival. It is a campus. New Canaan Country School, often shortened to Country School or NCCS, sits at 635 Frogtown Road, New Canaan, CT 06840, at the corner of Frogtown Road and Ponus Ridge. It is a coeducational independent day school: students go home at night. It is not a boarding school and not a public-school district. The published range is early childhood through grade 9. After ninth grade, graduates move on to other secondary schools. The motto is Fortune Favors the Bold. School colors are blue and white. The athletic mascot is the Cougar. Accreditation includes the Connecticut Association of Independent Schools, with membership in the National Association of Independent Schools.

Parents opened it as the Community School on 16 October 1916, with seventeen students in a New Canaan bungalow, and with Edith Dudley and Effie Dunton as co-principals. In 1936 the school moved to the Grace House property purchased from New York City’s Grace Episcopal Church and took the Country School name. That pastoral campus is why the phrase “country day” appears in searches: it names a type of independent school, not a civic “country day” on a wall calendar. Connecticut already has legal holidays. This campus has term dates, in-service days, and events such as the Frogtown Fair. You read those on the school’s own calendar.

The Country Day School movement began in the United States in the late nineteenth century: academically serious day schools with grounds and a full day, as an alternative to boarding school and to a short city schedule. New Canaan’s school belongs to that pattern. Greenwich Country Day, Cincinnati Country Day, and other campuses share the type. They do not share a national holiday. Each has its own town, grades, and year.

A campus on Frogtown Road, not a feast

Visitors who wanted a long weekend will not find one in the name. Visitors who wanted admissions need the school’s process, not a hashtag. What it is: independent coed day school, Pre-K through grade 9, New Canaan, Connecticut.

New Canaan the town is in Fairfield County. It is not Canaan in the Bible and not a liturgical “promised land” date. Patriots’ Day in neighboring Massachusetts and Maine is a third-Monday April state holiday; Connecticut’s public desks do not copy that Monday just because a private school sits near the New York line. Earth Day on 22 April may appear in a science unit. That is a lesson, not a legal break. The school’s handbook, not a novelty almanac, says when the campus is dark.

If the search promised a festival and handed you a campus on Frogtown Road, believe the campus.

When the calendar actually matters here

Families follow the published year: opening of term, winter and spring breaks, exam weeks, ninth-grade closing events. Those dates change. A handbook from another year is not this year. Federal Mondays such as Martin Luther King Jr. Day, Washington’s Birthday, and Memorial Day may or may not match a private school’s breaks. That is a handbook question. It is not a “national country day” question.

If you meant another Connecticut independent school with “country day” in the name, you meant a different campus: Easton, Greenwich, Fairfield, and others are not this one. If you meant a reunion, a fair, or an open house, use the school’s news page for that season. 1916 is a founding year, good for a centennial in 2016 and for later anniversaries. It is a poor reason to call in sick to a job in Hartford. A mascot is not a saint. A fair on the lawn is not a public holiday unless a legislature says so, and none has.
