Neva day

Neva day, in English calendar searches, is Nevada Day: the state holiday observed on the last Friday of October. It marks Nevada’s admission to the Union on 31 October 1864.

How it works

Nevada became the 36th state on 31 October 1864. That numbered date is the anniversary. The legal holiday is no longer glued to Halloween in most years. Since 2000 the state has observed Nevada Day on the last Friday of October, so the closure sits on a weekday and the weekend that follows is a three-day stretch for people who get that Friday off.

The short search “neva day” is the same holiday with letters dropped. It is not a separate feast, and it is not a day of the Neva River. If you needed St Petersburg’s river or a ship parade on the Neva, you are in a different listing. This page is Nevada’s Friday.

On the observed Friday, Nevada state, county, and city government offices close, along with most schools and libraries. Banks that follow the state holiday list close. Casinos and many private shops do not treat it as a national shutdown. Federal offices in Nevada follow the federal list, not this state Friday, unless the two calendars happen to agree. Name whose roster you mean before you travel to a counter.

31 October 1864 was a Monday. The anniversary weekday walks under Halloween each year and is usually not Friday. The observed Friday is a policy choice: move the day off to the end of the workweek. Halloween stays on 31 October, whatever weekday that is.

Last Friday is not always 31 October

The last Friday of October can be 25 through 31. In 2026 that Friday is 30 October. 31 October 2026 is a Saturday. The holiday Friday and the numbered anniversary therefore sit on two consecutive dates that year: Friday off, Saturday the anniversary night, with Halloween on that Saturday as well.

In some years the last Friday is 31 October itself, including 2003, 2008, 2014, and 2025. Those years the observed weekday and the admission date are the same square. That is a coincidence of the grid, not a rule that “Nevada Day is Halloween.” Most years they split.

Admission date: 31 October 1864, a Monday, every later 31 October as anniversary. Observed holiday: last Friday of October, from 2000. 2026 observed Friday: 30 October. 2026 anniversary and Halloween: Saturday 31 October.

Schools and state offices care about the Friday. Costume hours and door-to-door hours care about the 31st. Do not assume a Friday costume parade is the legal holiday, and do not assume a Saturday Halloween is a state closure.

Saturday for the parade, Friday for the office

Carson City has held a Nevada Day parade since 1938. After the holiday moved to Friday, the big public events, including that parade, sit on the following Saturday. A visitor who takes Friday off for the “day” and flies home Saturday morning misses the street. A visitor who only looks at Saturday may find the government counter shut the day before and open the next week.

Put both on a plan if you needed both: Friday for the closure, Saturday for the parade calendar in Carson City, and 31 October for the historical square. Counties and cities can add extra local Nevada Day events on other dates; those are city programmes, not the statewide Friday.

Nevada Day moved to a Friday so the weekend could start early. Halloween did not move with it. If you work a Monday-through-Friday job outside Nevada, this Friday is an ordinary weekday. It will not appear on a federal holiday list. If you work in Nevada for a state employer, it is a named weekday off. Write the date, not only the nickname. “Neva day” on a search bar is the nickname. 30 October 2026 is the date this year.
