what national day is it today

Today is D-Day’s anniversary only if the civil date is 6 June. In 2026 the sixth fell on Saturday. In 2027 it falls on Sunday. “What national day is it today” on any other square is not answered by Normandy. The museum’s own birthday is also 6 June, because the founders opened the building on the fifty-sixth anniversary of the landings. A museum birthday is not a national closing. Federal offices stay open. The French civil calendar for 6 June is a French question; the American federal table does not close for the landings.

The institution sits in New Orleans, in the Warehouse District, on Andrew Higgins Drive. Higgins Industries built landing craft in that city. Historian Stephen Ambrose and Gordon “Nick” Mueller, then at the University of New Orleans, led the project. It opened as a single exhibition hall under the name National D-Day Museum. Congress later designated it America’s national museum of the Second World War. The public name became the National WWII Museum in the 2000s as the campus grew beyond the Normandy story to the wider American war, including the Pacific and the home front.

If you typed “national wwii museum d day” because you need hours, the museum publishes its own timetable. Those hours are a ticket office’s hours. They are not a federal holiday schedule. Closed days the museum has used in the past include ordinary civic dates such as Thanksgiving and Christmas; confirm the year you will visit. A memory of a previous June Saturday is not this year’s door.

6 June 1944 is not 6 June 2000

The landings of 6 June 1944 were the start of the Allied invasion of German-occupied Normandy. The date is fixed. It does not move to a Monday. U.S. Memorial Day is the last Monday in May; Veterans Day is 11 November; Rhode Island’s Victory Day is the second Monday in August. None of those is D-Day. Stacking them into one “war day” is how none of them is kept. The museum’s annual public commemoration, when it holds one, is built around 6 June because that is both the landing date and the opening date. Check the museum’s event page for the year you mean. This page will not invent a ceremony that has not been posted.

6 June 1944: D-Day, Normandy landings. 6 June 2000: National D-Day Museum opens in New Orleans. Later: designated the national U.S. museum of World War II; campus expanded under the National WWII Museum name.

Not a U.S. federal holiday on 6 June. If you needed the history date, lock 6 June. If you needed the building, read the museum’s hours for the day you will stand in the queue. If you needed a day off work, look at Memorial Day or Veterans Day, not at this anniversary.

If you needed Victory in Europe, that is 8 May in Western Europe, not 6 June. Two June sixths share a numeral and not a year. 1944 is the landing. 2000 is the door. Buy a ticket for the door; keep the silence for the landing.

What a visit is, and what the date is

A visit is a ticket, a bag check, and time in galleries that now cover more than one amphibious assault. The original brief was D-Day; the later brief is the American war as a whole. You can go in March. You can go on 6 June. The anniversary is denser with public programming when the museum schedules it, and denser with other visitors. That is a crowd, not a law. If you cannot travel, the date is still 6 June on the calendar. A wreath, a reading of names, or a quiet hour at a local memorial is still the date. The New Orleans campus is not the only place the landings can be remembered.

After 6 June 2026 the next sixth is 6 June 2027. A visit in July is still a visit, only off the anniversary morning. The page holds an invasion date and a museum that opened on that anniversary. It does not hold a federal Monday, and it does not stand in for VE Day.
