Today is National Puppy Day only if the civil date is 23 March. From Thursday 3 September 2026 that Monday in March has already passed. The next 23 March is Tuesday 23 March 2027. A September weekday is not the named day, even if a puppy is asleep on your foot.

Unofficial U.S. day lists put puppies on 23 March. The date is a custom, not a statute. Shelters, clinics, and shops keep ordinary hours unless they choose an adoption drive or a clinic hour. A feed of party hats is optional. The calendar only named 23 March. It does not require a new puppy, a cake, or a costume. It also does not forbid a walk, a donation, or a foster listing.

Colleen Paige, the U.S. advocate who also founded National Dog Day on 26 August, is the name attached to this March square in the same unofficial-calendar world. Treat that as the popular origin story of a named day, not as a law. A state or a shop that “recognizes” the date is posting a nod. The mail still moves.

March 23 is not 26 August

International Dog Day and National Dog Day share 26 August. That is a different animal-welfare square, already used on this site as a late-summer date. National Puppy Day sits in March, in meteorological spring in the north and meteorological autumn in the south. A caption that mixes the two dates is how a shelter posts the wrong weekend. Puppies are dogs. The calendars still split the year.

Leap years do not move 23 March. Time zones only change which local morning first sees the 23rd. If you post across the date line, one side of the ocean is still on the 22nd while the other is already on the day. That is ordinary clock work, not a second puppy holiday.

Date every year: 23 March. 2026: Monday 23 March (already past from 3 September 2026). 2027: Tuesday 23 March. Not 26 August (National / International Dog Day). Status: unofficial observance, not a public holiday.

A puppy does not know it is 23 March. The date is for the humans who book the walk, the foster run, or the donation. The nap schedule stays the nap schedule.

How to keep the day without mixing jobs

If you wanted a public holiday, look at the civil table of the country you are in. 23 March is not on the U.S. federal list. If you wanted to help a shelter, that help is welcome on other dates; the named day is only a reminder. If you wanted a photograph, any morning the puppy can stay awake for will do. If you wanted the named day, wait for 23 March or keep the next one on a reminder.

Do not treat the date as a shopping duty. Do not treat it as a reason to surprise a household with an animal they cannot keep. The original point of a puppy day, in the same welfare language as dog day, is care for animals that already exist, including shelter animals. A new puppy is a years-long schedule. A hashtag is not a plan for housetraining.

A kind day in September is still kindness. It is not National Puppy Day. From 3 September 2026 the next named square is 23 March 2027. The puppy in the room will still need sleep, water, and a toilet trip tonight, named day or not.
