If you typed “what national day is it today” hoping the mustard Saturday would answer, the test is simple: is today the first Saturday in August? From this Thursday in early September 2026, it is not. The 2026 festival was Saturday 1 August 2026. That square has passed. The next first Saturday in August is 7 August 2027.

The day does not slide to a Monday. It does not wait for a full moon. Leap years do not move the first Saturday of August; they only change which calendar date that Saturday is. Time zones change which local morning first sees the Saturday. They do not create a second mustard day.

The National Mustard Museum is the host, not the U.S. Congress. Offices, banks, and public schools keep ordinary hours unless they choose a tasting of their own. A jar in the fridge is not proof that today is the day. A yellow shirt in September is still a shirt.

The yellow Saturday in Middleton

Barry Levenson began collecting mustards in 1986. The museum opened to the public in Mount Horeb, Wisconsin, in 1992, first under the Mount Horeb name. It moved to downtown Middleton in 2009 and took its present name. The museum’s own history dates the first Mustard Day celebration to 1991 in Mount Horeb. The street festival now occupies downtown Middleton, rain or shine, typically from late morning into afternoon on that first August Saturday.

The 2026 listing on the museum’s page was Saturday 1 August 2026, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Hubbard and Parmenter. Food, music, games, and mustard sampling are the usual kit. Hours, street closures, and weather calls belong on that year’s notice, not on last year’s memory. Middleton is in Dane County, near Madison. A jar bought in another state is not a ticket to the block party.

Find the first Saturday in August for the year you care about. Read the National Mustard Museum’s page for that Saturday’s hours and street plan. Treat any other “mustard Monday” as a local gag unless that flyer names a place.

Do not expect a federal close, a school close, or a mail halt. A condiment can close a Wisconsin street for a Saturday and still leave the rest of the country’s offices open. That is the correct scale of the holiday.

Mustard at home is not the festival

Yellow, Dijon, brown, honey, and whole-grain mustards are all mustard. The festival is the Saturday plus the museum’s block. You can open a jar on a Tuesday. You can visit the museum on an ordinary weekday when it is open. Neither act moves the first Saturday in August. The museum’s weekday hours are a separate listing from the festival hours.

Do not confuse the day with National Hot Dog Day, which has its own unofficial calendar, or with a county fair that happens to sell brats. Do not park a reminder on Labor Day in September and call the mustard job done. U.S. Labor Day in 2026 is Monday 7 September, a different feast with a different origin. Mustard may appear on a bun that Monday. The bun does not rename the day.
