National hugging day

National Hugging Day is an unofficial date on 21 January. Early September is the wrong season for that winter square. The next mark is Thursday 21 January 2027.

what national day is it today

A September weekday is not National Hugging Day. That unofficial date sits on 21 January every year. A “what national day is it today” list in September may be stacking food nicknames. This page is the January hug date, not a Valentine square and not a licence to grab a stranger on a train.

Kevin Zaborney of Michigan launched the day in 1986. It was listed in Chase’s Calendar of Events. He put it on 21 January because the date sits in the stretch after the December holidays and before Valentine’s Day on 14 February, a stretch he thought felt low. The first wide marking was from Clio, Michigan. The day is unofficial. Banks stay open. Schools stay in session. Mail runs.

21 January 2026 was a Wednesday; that square has already passed. 21 January 2027 is a Thursday. The date does not move to Friday. If 21 January is a Saturday, hugging day is Saturday. Northern late January is winter: short days, cold in much of the United States. That is the weather, not a hugging technique.

Why the date sits in January

December is crowded with named gatherings. 14 February is crowded with a commercial love date. 21 January is a quiet civil square in between. Zaborney wanted a reminder to show care in public without waiting for a feast. The reminder is a date. It is not a medical prescription and not a workplace policy.

The day is also called National Hug Day, and some posts say International Hug Day or Global Hug Day. Those are extra adjectives on 21 January, not extra months. There is no separate summer hugging statute. If a school holds a “hugathon” on another weekday, that is a local event. It does not move 21 January.

Unofficial date: 21 January every year. Started in 1986 by Kevin Zaborney, first marked from Clio, Michigan. 2027 weekday: Thursday. 2026 was Wednesday. January offices, banks, and mail keep ordinary hours.

Consent first: a hug is an offer, not a surprise attack. People who do not want to be touched are not spoiling the day. They are using the same calendar with a different body. A wave, a verbal greeting, or a note can carry the date. A forced hug on a colleague is not a celebration. It is a problem. Ask. Accept no. Keep your arms.

21 January is a reminder to offer a hug, not a warrant to collect one. The polite version starts with a question and can end with a nod.

How to keep the day without making it awkward

Mark people who already hug you: family, friends, a partner who likes it. Skip people you do not know. Skip anyone at work unless you already have that kind of greeting and they still want it. A classroom that uses the date should teach asking, not scoring. A charity event that uses hugs as a fundraiser still needs clear yes-and-no.

If you live alone, the date does not require a hunt. Call someone. Write. Sit with a pet if that is the household’s version of contact. Missing 21 January does not freeze you until the next winter. The next unofficial square is simply the next 21 January.

From 3 September 2026 the January Thursday is still ahead. Do not treat a September list as a second hugging day. Do not park the reminder on Valentine’s Day and call the job done. Those are other dates with other scripts. This page is 21 January only.
