Today, Thursday 3 September 2026, is not “National History Day” as a civic feast. There is no 3 September closing for it, and there is no single month-and-day like a birthday. The name belongs to a nonprofit education program and to its contest. Students spend a school year on a topic, then compete locally, at affiliate or state level, and, if they advance, at the national contest in June.

“What national day is it today” still wants a square on the wall. This program does not give you one. It gives you a season of research and a week of judging. The 2026 national contest ran 14–18 June at College Park, Maryland, under the theme Revolution, Reaction, Reform in History, timed with the 250th anniversary of the Declaration of Independence. That week has already ended. The next contest cycle uses a new theme and a new June.

A food-day sticker and this contest share the word “national” and almost nothing else. One is a caption. The other is a judged argument with a bibliography. If you needed a day off, look at a public-holiday table. If you needed a project, look at nhd.org and your school’s coordinator, not at a brunch menu.

How the contest is built

David Van Tassel, a history professor at Case Western Reserve University, started a local History Day in Cleveland. On 11 May 1974, students from middle and high schools in that area competed on the Case Western campus. The idea grew into National History Day, now based in College Park. Affiliates run in all fifty U.S. states and in other places the organization lists, including Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, Guam, and some international schools.

Students work alone or in a group. There are two divisions: Junior (grades 6–8) and Senior (grades 9–12). Papers are individual only. The other four categories allow individuals or groups of two to five. Every entry has to do more than retell a story. It has to make a historical argument tied to that year’s theme, backed by research in libraries, archives, museums, and other sources, plus an annotated bibliography and a process paper as the rules require.

Read the year’s theme and the Contest Rule Book before you pick a topic. Choose a topic narrow enough to argue, broad enough to source. Pick a category: paper, exhibit, documentary, performance, or website.

Compete at the school or regional level; winners move up; national finals are in June at College Park. A documentary is a short student film, timed in minutes under the rule book. An exhibit is a museum-style board. A performance is live. A website is built in the contest’s own editor. A paper is written history. The category is a vehicle. The argument is the cargo. A pretty board with no claim is not the assignment. History Day is a school year with a deadline, not a Monday with the courthouse locked.

What the name is not

It is not Constitution Day, Citizenship Day, or Independence Day. Those have their own civic dates. It is not a public holiday in Maryland just because the finals meet there. College Park in mid-June is a campus full of projects, families, and judges. Ordinary offices elsewhere stay open. Teachers use the program for skills: research, writing, citation, speaking. That use does not turn June into a bank holiday.

Themes change. The 2026 lens was revolution, reaction, and reform. Coordinators hear the next theme before the public announcement, so classrooms do not mix two years. If you are starting a project in September 2026, you are in a new cycle, not still in the June that just closed. Ask the coordinator which theme governs your entry. Do not copy a 2026 title onto a 2027 board.
