Today is “National Friends Day” only if you have already chosen which unofficial sticker you meant. If you meant Best Friends Day, the civil date is 8 June. In 2026 that was a Monday. In 2027 it is a Tuesday. If you meant the greeting-card Friendship Day, the civil date is the first Sunday in August: 2 August in 2026, 1 August in 2027. “What national day is it today” cannot be answered by the word friends alone. The word is doing too much work.

The slug is shorter than “friendship.” That shortness is why this page exists. People type national friends day when they want a square for pals and do not want to argue about an extra syllable. Popular calendars do not repay that brevity with one statute. National Day Calendar lists Best Friends Day on 8 June and still treats the origin as unclear. The August Sunday is the older commercial Friendship Day in U.S. and Indian popular use. The United Nations date, 30 July, is a third square under a longer name. Three answers, all used in the wild, none of them a federal close.

If a roundup on your phone already printed “National Friends Day” on a random weekday in April or September, that roundup is a novelty mill. This page will not invent a fourth date to match a screenshot. Ask which list wrote the caption. Then check a date you can defend: 8 June, the August Sunday, or 30 July.

June 8, the August Sunday, and the trap of the short name

June 8 sits in early northern summer. The August Sunday sits in later northern summer. July 30 sits between them. A meal on 8 June does not cover the August Sunday. A card on the August Sunday does not cover 8 June. If you only have one evening and you only have the short name, pick the date your friend already uses. The friendship will not grade you on lexicography. The calendar will still finish.

United States federal table: none of the above. Ask which date the other person already has in mind. If nobody has one, pick 8 June or the August Sunday and say which you picked. Do not freeze last year’s numbered August day. The Sunday moves.

If you needed a locked counter, this cluster will not lock one. A friend is not a Monday in a labour code. If the till is open and the chat is quiet, the missing piece is the message, not the statute.

How to keep a friends’ day without a law

Send the note on the square you named. If 8 June is a work scramble, the following Saturday is still early summer in the north and still a Saturday. If the August Sunday is a travel day, a call on that Sunday still lands on the named morning. Missing both dates does not cancel the friendship. The next 8 June is the next 8 June. The next first Sunday in August will have a new number.

Stores keep ordinary hours on all three marks. Gifts are optional. A walk, a meal, a letter, or nothing but a sentence are ordinary ways people use the labels. None of those is required. After 8 June 2026 the next 8 June is 8 June 2027. After 2 August 2026 the next first Sunday is 1 August 2027. The English name is messy. The tills stay open. Nobody is ranked.
