National french fry day
National French Fry Day is an unofficial U.S. food day widely listed on 13 July. In 2026 that Monday has already passed. It does not close banks or schools.
what national day is it today
From Thursday 3 September 2026, today is not National French Fry Day. The 2026 square was Monday 13 July. The next widely listed date is Tuesday 13 July 2027. Unofficial food days stay on their civil date. They do not slide to Friday because potatoes fry well on a weekend. If a shop runs a fry special on another day, that is a shop calendar, not a rewrite of 13 July.
What national day is it today still needs a name. Many unofficial U.S. days share a date with one another, and none of them is the federal list. National French Fry Day answers only the fry square. It does not tell you the federal holiday table, and it does not tell you National Sandwich Day, which unofficial lists put on 3 November. Ask for the food you meant, then match the square.
13 July on unofficial lists
American promotional calendars widely print 13 July as National French Fry Day. There is no statute behind the printing. There is no international treaty on cut potatoes. The English name french fry / french fried potatoes refers to the cut and the frying, not to a nationality test. Belgium and France both claim fried potato sticks as home cooking. This page does not award the origin. It awards the unofficial U.S. label a date: 13 July.
In 2027, 13 July is a Tuesday. Leap years do not move 13 July. Northern July is midsummer. Southern July is winter. The fry does not change hemisphere; the weather around the picnic does. A frozen bag in a hot apartment still counts as the food. An empty fryer on 13 July still leaves the date intact.
Widely listed unofficial date: 13 July every year. 2026: Monday 13 July (already past as of 3 September 2026). 2027: Tuesday 13 July. A restaurant deal on another day does not move 13 July.
How to keep a fry day without a closing
Cook potatoes in oil, or buy them already fried, or eat them with whatever the house already serves. Salt is common. Ketchup, mayonnaise, vinegar, or nothing extra are all already in use somewhere; the unofficial day does not pick a condiment. If you do not eat fried food, the date can pass without a performance review. If a restaurant is shut that Tuesday, look at its door hours. The folk day cannot open a till.
Do not file this square under Thanksgiving sides, under National Potato Day if you are on a different unofficial list, or under Belgium’s civic holidays. A school can serve fries on 13 July only if school is even in session, which in many U.S. districts it is not, because July is summer break. A closed cafeteria in July is summer, not a fry boycott.
The potato was food before it was a hashtag. If you fry it on the 14th, you are late for the list and on time for lunch.
