National cookie day

National Cookie Day is an unofficial U.S. food date on December 4. It is not a public holiday. From 3 September 2026 the next square is Friday 4 December 2026.

what national day is it today

3 September 2026 is an ordinary Thursday. It is not National Cookie Day. That food date sits on 4 December every year. “What national day is it today” wants whatever unofficial name a bakery calendar printed on this morning. This page answers one tray: 4 December, not a list of every branded dessert that shares a Thursday in September, and not Christmas baking by another name.

Unofficial dessert days leave the bank open. Schools stay in session. The postal service runs. A chain that gives a free cookie on 4 December is running a promotion for that date, at that counter. Last December’s code is not this December’s ticket. If you needed a legal holiday in early December, you still do not have one on the 4th. If you needed a cookie, the shop’s ordinary hours for 3 September will sell you one without a hashtag.

4 December 2026 is a Friday. 4 December 2027 is a Saturday. The date does not jump to the nearest Monday. When the 4th is a Sunday, cookie day is Sunday, and Sunday bakery hours apply. Advent may already have begun by then in Western churches; that season is a separate clock. Cookie Day does not move Easter, Christmas Eve, or Hanukkah. It is a December square with sugar on it.

A bakery picked the December date

Matt Nader, co-founder of the Blue Chip Cookie Company in San Francisco, proposed National Cookie Day in 1987 and put it on 4 December, in the stretch of the year when people already bake and buy treats. The day is a shopkeeper’s date that stuck, not a congressional feast. Cookie Monster later marked 4 December on Sesame Street and on social accounts. That is a character joining a date, not a founding myth that the date came from the show.

Cookies as food are older than 1987. Small sweet cakes and test-batters have a long bakery history. The unofficial day does not claim to be the invention of the biscuit. It claims a Thursday-through-Sunday in early December, depending on the year, as a moment to notice the tray. That is all the charter you get.

Unofficial U.S. date: 4 December every year. 2026 weekday: Friday. 2027: Saturday. Not a bank holiday and not a postal closing. Named in 1987 by Matt Nader of Blue Chip Cookie Company, San Francisco. From 3 September 2026 to 4 December 2026: the December Friday is the one to mark.

A cookie on 4 December is a December cookie. Saving the coupon for July and calling it the holiday misses the month on purpose.

What a shop may do that Friday

Bakeries and chains sometimes post a free cookie, a cheap cookie, or an app extra on 4 December. They change the offer from year to year. A shop that gave one away last winter may sell at full price this winter. Read that shop’s notice for that Friday. A line in the morning is a line, not a national statistic. Afternoon still counts as the day; it may not count as a full tray.

Christmas cookie exchanges, Advent calendars, and Saint Nicholas Day on 6 December sit near this square. They are other customs. National Cookie Day does not deputise them and they do not cancel it. You can bake on all of them. Only 4 December is this unofficial name. If you wanted a public holiday built around sugar, you will not find one here. You will find a Friday in 2026, a Saturday in 2027, and a kitchen that was going to smell like butter anyway.
