National coming out day

National Coming Out Day is 11 October every year. It is an LGBTQ awareness date begun in 1988, not a public holiday. Offices and mail follow ordinary hours.

what national day is it today

Today is National Coming Out Day only if the civil date is 11 October. In 2026 that is a Sunday. In 2027 it is a Monday. Any other October date is a different square. The search is a calendar question, not a personality quiz. A supportive message in June during Pride Month is still a message. It does not rename June as 11 October, and it does not move the eleventh into June.

Robert Eichberg and Jean O’Leary inaugurated the day in 1988. They chose 11 October because it was the first anniversary of the 1987 Second National March on Washington for Lesbian and Gay Rights. The day asked people who could safely do so to take a next step in being known as lesbian, gay, bisexual, or otherwise queer to family, friends, or colleagues. It was framed as ordinary political speech: the personal made public on purpose. It was not framed as a carnival, and it was not framed as a duty that overrides safety.

The date is unofficial as a civic close. It does not appear on the United States federal holiday table. A workplace that flies a flag or hosts a lunch is making a workplace choice. A workplace that does nothing is still on 11 October. Later years saw observances in other countries on the same eleventh; some listings put the United Kingdom on 12 October. If you are writing a poster, say which calendar you mean.

A fixed eleventh, not Pride Month

Pride Month in the United States is June, tied to the 1969 Stonewall uprising in late June. National Coming Out Day is mid-October. International Coming Out Day is sometimes used as a synonym for the same October date. Do not file the eleventh under Pride weekend, under National HIV Testing Day, or under Transgender Day of Remembrance on 20 November. Those appointments have their own jobs. Stacking them into one “LGBTQ day” is how none of them is kept.

Rule: 11 October, every year. 2026: Sunday 11 October. 2027: Monday 11 October. Origin: 1988, anniversary of the 11 October 1987 march on Washington. Not a U.S. federal closing; not Pride Month; not 20 November.

Read the actual date: 11 October in the year in front of you. If you are marking it in public, do not require anyone else to disclose anything. If someone is not safe to be visible, the day is not a test they failed.

If you wanted a legal holiday, this is the wrong page. Look at a statutory list. Coming out is not a stamp you collect on one Sunday. October 11 is a public invitation. It is not a deadline and not a dare.

Visibility without a dare

People who keep the day use it to tell one more person, to thank someone who already knows, or to stand as an ally without demanding a story from anyone else. Schools, campuses, and advocacy groups often run events. The Human Rights Campaign later used a Keith Haring image in connection with the day; that is an image history, not a liturgy. You do not need the image to keep the date. You do need consent: other people’s names and photographs are not decoration.

After 11 October 2026 the next eleventh is 11 October 2027. A conversation in November is still a conversation, only later than the awareness date. It is not a closing, and it is not a demand that anyone trade safety for a hashtag. If you needed Pride in June, use June. If you needed this October date, lock the eleventh and leave the rest of the rainbow calendar on its own rows.
