National coaching day
National Coaching Day is the usual search for National Coaches Day: 6 October. President Richard Nixon proclaimed that date in 1972. It is unofficial recognition, not a federal closing.
what national day is it today
What national day is it today, on this page, means: is the civil date 6 October? From Thursday, 3 September 2026, it is not. The next National Coaches Day is Tuesday, 6 October 2026. Then Wednesday, 6 October 2027. The square does not move to the nearest weekend, and it does not close the school. A Friday banquet can still thank a coach. It is not the named day.
Proclamation 4157, signed 19 September 1972, named 6 October 1972 National Coaches Day, following a Senate joint resolution. Calendars have kept 6 October since. Later Senate resolutions have again designated particular years’ 6 October as National Coaches Day. That is recognition language. It is not a line in the federal holiday statute, so banks and the post office stay on ordinary hours.
The proclamation spoke of coaches as teachers in specialized fields and as counselors, not only of scoreboard work. Youth, school, college, and professional coaches all sit under the same date. So do coaches who never wear a whistle if you mean the word in a wider sense. The printed day does not audit your roster.
A Tuesday in the season, not a trophy
Early October in the Northern Hemisphere is meteorological autumn. High-school fall sports are already in season. The thank-you lands while practices are still on the calendar, not in a July lull. That is convenient and not a law. A club that marks a coach on the last game instead of 6 October has not broken a statute. It has chosen a different square.
National Coaching Day is not International Coaching Week, which professional coaching bodies have used for workplace and life coaches. If you meant a credentialed coach at work, check that group’s week. If you meant the person running practice after school, 6 October is the U.S. civic nickname you typed.
Date: 6 October every year. 2026: Tuesday, 6 October. 2027: Wednesday, 6 October. Origin: Nixon Proclamation 4157, 19 September 1972. Status: unofficial. No Monday-shift rule, because there is no legal closing to shift.
The coach already gave you the hour after school. Returning one Tuesday of thanks is not a large invoice.
How to keep 6 October
Name the person. A note, a word at practice, or a meal works. Gifts are optional. The day is easy to miss because it is a fixed weekday in a busy month: October also holds Unity Day in many U.S. schools, Mole Day on the 23rd, and, in 2026, the federal Columbus Day Monday on the 12th. Those are other pages. Do not park the coach reminder on Teacher Appreciation Week in May and decide the job is done.
If 6 October is a game day, the thank-you can sit before kickoff without renaming the game. If it is a rest day, it is still 6 October. The calendar does not need a win to be correct.
