If today is 29 October, National Cat Day is one of the unofficial names on that square in U.S. use. If today is any other date, it is not National Cat Day, even if your cat is sitting on the keyboard. What national day is it today, as a general hunt, still depends on which private list you opened; several stickers can share 29 October. The cat date is the one this page is for. A bank will treat the day as an ordinary weekday.

The U.S. date was started in 2005 by Colleen Paige as National Cat Day, aimed at adoption and at the animals already in the house. It is a campaign date, not a statute. Shelters may run events. They may not. The date does not force a clinic to waive fees, and it does not force a landlord to allow a pet. Those are separate rules.

International Cat Day, 8 August, is a different mark, kept by international animal groups. August is high summer in the north; 29 October is autumn. Do not “make up” a missed October on 8 August and call the American date done, or skip 29 October because you already posted a picture in August. Two dates can both be kind to cats. They are still two dates.

October 29 on a real calendar

29 October 2026 is a Thursday. The date does not float to a Monday. There is no observed-Friday rule. Schools run. Mail runs. The season in the northern United States is autumn: shorter evenings, indoor animals, the stretch between the equinox and the December solstice. That is useful only as weather for a porch cat and for a shelter fair. It is not a closing time.

People type national cat day when they want a caption, a reminder to book a vet, or a reason to put a bowl down with a bit of ceremony. The ceremony is optional. The cat’s needs are not dated. Food, water, a clean box, and a closed balcony door are the same jobs on 28 October. The label is extra ink for humans.

What the day can actually hold

If you live with a cat, the honest observance is ordinary care done on time: food, water, litter, a scratch post, a vet book if something is already wrong. If you do not, and you wanted to help, look at a local shelter’s own listing for that week instead of dumping a surprise animal on 29 October. Impulse pets are how a themed day becomes someone else’s January problem. Adoption is a contract, not a caption.

Pictures are fine. They do not replace a box that has not been scooped. If two unofficial animal days land near each other, you may mark both. The cat will not grade you. If 29 October is a work Thursday, you do not get a federal afternoon off. Pet the cat before the commute or after it. The date will still be 29 October when you get home.
