How many week days in the year depends on what you count as a week day. If you mean Monday through Friday, a non-leap year holds 260 or 261 of them, because 365 is 52 weeks plus one leftover date. If that leftover is Saturday or Sunday, you get 260 weekdays. If it is Monday through Friday, you get 261. A leap year adds a second leftover date, so the weekday stock can be 260, 261, or 262.

2026 is not a leap year. 1 January 2026 is a Thursday and 31 December 2026 is a Thursday, so Thursday occurs 53 times and every other name occurs 52 times. Monday through Friday therefore appear 261 times. Weekend days take the rest: 104 Saturdays and Sundays. 261 plus 104 is 365. That count is the grid. Holidays still have to come off if you wanted working days.

Do not borrow a leap year’s total. 2024 had an extra February day; 2026 does not. The names stay the same seven. Only the number of times each name appears changes.

Days of the week names

Days of the week names in English are Sunday, Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday. Names of the days of the week in that order are the usual U.S. list, with Sunday first. ISO 8601 weeks start on Monday and still use the same seven names. The starting name is a convention. The set is not.

Names for day in this sense are those seven labels, not saint’s-day name days from other calendars. A Central European name day is a personal feast tied to a given name. Sunday: the Sun’s day in the English inheritance. Monday: the Moon’s day. Tuesday: Tiw’s day. Wednesday: Woden’s day. Thursday: Thor’s day. Friday: Frigg’s day. Saturday: Saturn’s day. Other languages keep different honorees and still divide time into seven. Romance names lean on the same planets for the start of the week and then on numbers or gods. You do not need those lists to use an English planner. You need the seven English words and the rule for which one 1 January is.

There are only seven names. The year is long because it repeats them, not because it invents an eighth.

Which list you are holding

If the question was payroll, start with 261 weekdays in 2026, then subtract the holiday calendar you actually use. If the question was “how many Tuesdays,” the answer for 2026 is 52. If the question was “what are the names,” the answer is the seven words, in the Sunday-first or Monday-first order your form asked for. Write the order on the form. Do not assume the other person starts the week where you do.

A shift roster can put work on Sunday and rest on Wednesday. The names do not change to match the shift. Wednesday remains Wednesday. The work meaning is local. Count names first, then mark which of those named dates are yours.
