How it works

The date is a weekday rule, not a month-and-number rule. Find August. Find the first Saturday. That is the day. If August 1 is a Saturday, as it was in 2026, the festival is August 1. If August 1 is a Wednesday, the day waits until the first Saturday after that. It never slides to Friday for a long weekend and never moves to Monday because offices are closed.

The National Mustard Museum in Middleton, Wisconsin, hosts the public street festival. The museum dates the celebration in Mount Horeb to 1991 and now holds it in downtown Middleton, rain or shine. The 2026 event ran Saturday, August 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. That window is a daytime Saturday, not an evening commute and not a Sunday service. Banks stay open or closed according to their own Saturday rules. Schools are on their summer calendar. Nobody gets a federal day off for mustard.

You can mark the condiment anywhere. The named festival with closed streets, music, and sampling is the Wisconsin one. A kitchen in another state that makes a mustard sandwich on that Saturday is keeping the weekday, not attending the museum’s block party.

Why the calendar locks it to Saturday

A floating Saturday is a weekend on purpose. Organizers chose the first Saturday in August so people could come without taking a weekday off work. That is the whole mechanism. Compare it with a fixed date such as July 4, which can land on a Tuesday and still be the holiday. Mustard Day refuses the Tuesday. If you only have weekdays free, you miss the official street date unless you travel on Friday and stay through Saturday.

August in the Northern Hemisphere is meteorological summer. The first Saturday in that month is a high-summer weekend, long light, outdoor food. In the Southern Hemisphere, early August is winter. The Wisconsin festival does not reverse for that. It stays on the Wisconsin summer Saturday.

Rule: first Saturday in August, every year. 2026: Saturday, August 1, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. in Middleton. Not a U.S. federal holiday; ordinary Saturday hours elsewhere. The museum event is local; the weekday rule is what travelers can copy.

A condiment festival that insists on Saturday is already doing you a favor: you cannot accidentally drop it into a Tuesday staff meeting.

What the day is not

It is not Mardi Gras, which is always a Tuesday. It is not a harvest fair tied to a full moon. It is not National Mustard Month as a substitute: the festival is one Saturday, even if grocers run a longer mustard display. It is not a day when mustard factories legally shut. Grocery mustard is for sale on Friday and on Sunday the same as on the festival Saturday.

Because the date is “first Saturday,” two years can print different August numbers and still be the same kind of day. Do not copy August 1 forward as a tradition unless August 1 is again a Saturday. The 2026 collision of the first of the month with Saturday was luck. The next first Saturday will be whatever August’s grid prints.

If you need a weekday mustard errand — a store run, a warehouse shift, a school lunch — that errand is not Mustard Day. It is mustard on a Thursday. The name on this page belongs to the Saturday.
