Mothers day poem
A Mother's Day poem is a gift of lines for the holiday, not a public feast. In the United States the day is the second Sunday in May; the poem is the text you write or choose for one person.
How it works
The holiday gives you a date. The poem gives you a voice on that date. U.S. Mother's Day as a national observance goes back to the campaign of Anna Jarvis and a 1914 presidential proclamation that named the second Sunday in May. The day is a civil and commercial Sunday, not a Mass feast with a fixed saint. A poem is optional. Many people use a card, a call, a meal, or a visit instead. The poem is for when words are the present.
Mothering Sunday in the United Kingdom is a different appointment: the fourth Sunday of Lent. Do not paste a U.S. May poem onto that Lent date and call the calendars the same. If the person you are writing to lives on another country's clock, use that country's day. The verse can travel. The Sunday cannot.
A useful poem is specific. It names what she did, what she likes, or what you remember from a kitchen, a job, a joke, a hard year. A verse that could be mailed to any mother is a greeting-card template. Templates are fine if you add one true detail. They fail when they praise “a mother's love” and never mention her.
What to put on the page
Keep it short enough to read aloud without a podium. Four to twelve lines is enough for a card. Rhyme is optional. Meter is optional. Honesty is not. If she hates surprise parties, do not write as if she collects them. If she raised you with a second parent, you can say so. If the day is complicated because of death, distance, or a break, a quiet poem can tell the truth without pretending the holiday is simple.
You may copy a public-domain poem and add a note. Older pieces such as Rudyard Kipling's “Mother o' Mine” or Edgar Allan Poe's “To My Mother” are in that category. Read the whole poem before you paste it; a famous title is not a guarantee that the tone fits your mother. Copyrighted contemporary poems need permission or a purchased card that already licensed them. Do not lift a living poet's stanza into a social post as if it were yours.
Write her name, not the word “Mom” alone if other people will see the page. Pick one scene: a ride to school, a recipe, a night she waited up, a skill she taught. End on a present-tense thanks or a wish for the day, not on a lecture about motherhood.
Read it out loud once. Cut any line you would be embarrassed to say at the table. If the poem still works after you change the name, you have not written to her yet.
When to give it
Give it on the Sunday, or the day you will actually see her. A poem sent a week early is a letter. A poem sent a week late is still a poem; the holiday is a prompt, not a statute of limitations. If several children are writing, do not compete for the longest file. One true stanza beats a page of borrowed adjectives.
Teachers sometimes assign a Mother's Day poem in the week before the second Sunday in May. The assignment is schoolwork with a holiday label. The person who receives it may still keep it. Print it so it survives a phone swap. If you are buying a book of poems instead of writing one, open it and mark a page; an unmarked gift book is a doorstop until someone hunts.
Questions and answers
- When is Mother's Day for the poem?
- In the United States, the second Sunday in May. In the United Kingdom, Mothering Sunday is the fourth Sunday of Lent, a different date.
- Does the poem have to rhyme?
- No. Short, specific lines that name her will do. Rhyme helps only if it does not force a fake ending.
- Can I use a famous poem instead of writing one?
- Yes, if it is public domain or you have the right to copy it. Add a line of your own so the gift is still addressed to her.
