Months of the year

How it works

A month is a named block of civil dates. It is not a perfect fourth of a year. Four months have 30 days, seven have 31, and February has 28 in a common year or 29 in a leap year. 2026 is a common year, so February has 28 days and the year has 365. Holidays that use a numeral, such as 25 December, sit still inside their month. Holidays that use a weekday rule, such as the first Monday in September, slide around inside their month as the grid changes.

How it works for planning is boring on purpose. You cannot put Thanksgiving in “late fall” on a contract. You put it on the fourth Thursday in November. You cannot put Labor Day on “September.” You put it on that month’s first Monday. The month name gets you to the right page of the calendar. The rule inside the month gets you to the day off.

The twelve names in English are January, February, March, April, May, June, July, August, September, October, November, and December. They run in that order. There is no thirteenth month in this civil system. Quarter-years are groups of three months, not a second calendar. Weeks cut across month borders: a week can start in January and end in February without becoming a new kind of time.

The twelve lengths

The mnemonic still earns its keep: thirty days hath September, April, June, and November. The rest have thirty-one, except February. In 2026, February stops at 28. Do not borrow the 29th from 2024 or 2028. A holiday dated 29 February does not occur in 2026. A birthday on that leap day needs a house rule in common years; the civil calendar will not invent a square.

January — 31 days. New Year’s Day sits on the 1st. Martin Luther King Jr. Day sits on the third Monday. February — 28 days in 2026. Washington’s Birthday is the third Monday. March — 31 days. Eid al-Fitr in 2026 is expected in this month on the lunar conversion, not on a fixed Gregorian numeral.

April — 30 days. Patriots’ Day in Massachusetts and Maine is the third Monday. May — 31 days. Memorial Day is the last Monday. Eid al-Adha in 2026 is expected in this month on the lunar conversion. June — 30 days. Juneteenth is 19 June.

July — 31 days. Independence Day is 4 July. August — 31 days. The federal list is quiet here. September — 30 days. Labor Day is the first Monday. 2026’s first Monday is the 7th. October — 31 days. Columbus Day is the second Monday.

November — 30 days. Veterans Day is 11 November. Thanksgiving is the fourth Thursday. December — 31 days. Christmas Day is 25 December. A month is a box with a known number of days. A holiday that will not name its box is still a wish.

Holidays live in months, not in slogans

People say “the holiday month” and mean December. December holds Christmas and a cluster of other winter dates, but January holds New Year’s Day, November holds Thanksgiving, and spring holds its own legal Mondays. If you only decorate one month, you will be surprised by a closure in January. Read the year as twelve boxes. Put each named day in one box. Then count.

Lunar holidays will not stay in the same Gregorian month forever. Eid walks earlier by about eleven days each civil year. A feast that sat in March can sit in February later. The month of the year on a school poster is a Gregorian month. The month of the Islamic year is a different twelve. When a holiday belongs to a lunar month, write that name first, then pencil the civil month in pencil.

From Thursday 3 September 2026 you are in the ninth month, day 3, with 27 days left in September after today. That remainder is how month math pays rent: not “September vibes,” but 27 midnights until October begins.
