How it works is a weekday sitting after a weekend of games. In the National Football League, most regular-season games fall on Sunday. Monday Night Football adds a game on Monday evening. Thursday Night Football adds another. College football loads Saturday. By Monday morning, many of those results are in. Anyone with a screen can see who threw the interception. That person is now in a position to explain, with great confidence, what should have been obvious on Saturday night.

The quarterback on the field had to choose a play with a clock running and a defense moving. The Monday morning quarterback has the final score, the replay, and coffee. Those are not the same job. The phrase is an insult when it means “you are brave now that nothing can hit you.” It is a description when it means “we are reviewing yesterday with information yesterday did not have.”

The calendar piece is the word Monday. The critique is timed to the first weekday after the weekend slate: Saturday: college games, some professional games in other sports. Sunday: the NFL’s main day.

If you are the one being called a Monday morning quarterback, the useful test is simple. Did you have this advice before the play, in a form someone could have used? If yes, you were a critic in real time. If no, you are visiting the wreck with a map that includes the crater. Say that out loud. It keeps the review honest.

Monday morning is a fine time to watch the film. It is a poor time to pretend you called the blitz on Saturday from the sofa.

When Monday is the game, not the review

Monday Night Football means the weekday is also a playing day. A take posted at 10:00 on Monday about Sunday is still hindsight. A take posted at 10:00 on Monday about tonight’s kickoff is a preview. Do not mix them. The idiom assumes the contest is over. If the contest is tonight, you are not a Monday morning quarterback yet. You are a person with a morning and a hypothesis.

Workplaces steal the phrase for any late critique of a decision. A project that shipped on Friday will collect Monday notes. Some of those notes are how a team learns. Some are how a team dodges blame. Separate them by whether the speaker had a chance to speak before the ship date. The weekday did not create the cowardice. It only gave it a well-known name.

The week will offer another weekend. If the point of Monday is to play better next Saturday, write the change as a time and a job: who does what before the next snap. If the point is to feel smart, the idiom already has you matched. The scoreboard will not reopen because the take was sharp.
