How it works is correction, then the same winter dates everyone else is using. A missing letter does not open a second holiday. It does not shift the feast to a Friday. It does not create a brand. If you are sending a message, add the “y” unless you are quoting a child's writing or a cramped sign. If you are searching, the results you want are still the greeting, the Eve, and the Day.

Cards, shop windows, and iron-on tees drop letters because space is short or because the designer thought the stump looked friendly. Read them as Merry Christmas. Answer them as Merry Christmas. Do not build a tradition around the typo; it will not repay you. The feast is older than the keyboard that skipped the key.

In the United States the civil pair is unchanged by spelling: December 24 is Eve, December 25 is the federal holiday. Stores may close or shorten hours because of those dates, not because a sign lost a letter. If a mug says MERR CHRISTMAS, the cocoa does not care.

Intended greeting: Merry Christmas. Civil Eve: December 24. Civil Day: December 25. Typo policy: fix it in a message you sign; leave it in a photo of a child's plate.

A greeting that still has to arrive

A greeting works when a person receives it on time. Send it for the 25th, or for the 24th if your house starts then. Sending it in October because the design is ready is advertising. Sending it on January 2 is a late kindness; call it late if you need to. The missing “y” will not disguise a late card as fashionable. It will only look like you typed in a hurry, which you did.

If you are hanging letters on a mantel, count them before you hang them. Merry is five letters. Christmas is nine. Merr is four, and the gap will show. That is the whole mechanic. People will still know what you meant, because the feast is not a puzzle. They will also know you were one tile short.

Merr is not a dialect. It is a key that did not go down. Put the y back unless a five-year-old already glued the sign.

What not to hang on a missing letter

Do not hang a new date on it. Do not hang a claim that your house keeps Christmas on a different morning because the banner is short. Do not hang an argument about other greetings on a spelling error; that argument, if you need it, should use whole words. Merr Christmas is a broken Merry Christmas. Whole words are the repair.

If you came from a search because a listing used the four-letter version, you are in the right season. Light the Eve if it is the 24th. Keep the Day if it is the 25th. Say the greeting with the letter in it. Then the page has done the only job a typo page can do: send you back to the feast that was meant.
