May Day is 1 May. May itself has 31 days every year, so the month always runs from the first through the thirty-first.

The first of May, and the other May
May Day is the first of May. In some places it is a spring festival, with greenery and a maypole. In many countries 1 May is also International Workers’ Day, a public holiday. The square on the calendar is the same even when the meaning is not. What a country does with that square is local law and custom. It does not change how many days the month holds.
May Day is not 31 May. It is not “the Monday nearest 1 May” unless a local holiday rule moves a day off work to a Monday. The name points at the date. If your workplace is closed on the first Monday in May instead, that is a transferred rest day. The first of May is still the first of May.
The distress call “mayday” is a different word. It is a radio signal, said three times, not a spring festival. A page about May Day is about 1 May. If you needed the emergency call, you are in the wrong entry of the dictionary.
May has thirty-one days in every year. Leap day never visits it, so you do not have to check the year before you count the month.
How far it is to a May date
How many days until May 1 depends on today’s date. If 1 May has not yet arrived this year, add the leftover days of the current month, every full month in between, and then 1. If 1 May has already passed, the next 1 May is next year. When the span crosses February, use 28 days or 29, not a guessed 30.
The same method works for other May dates. How many days until May 28 is the count to the twenty-eighth, not to the first. How many days until May 29 is one day longer than the count to the 28th in the same year, because those two dates sit next to each other. From 28 May to 29 May is one day. From today to each of them is two different totals.
From 3 September 2026, May 2026 has already gone. 1 May 2027 is 240 days away, 28 May 2027 is 267 days away, and 29 May 2027 is 268 days away. Tomorrow each of those three numbers drops by one. A live countdown has to be redone from today’s date. The method does not change.
Decide whether you are counting nights until the morning of the date, or whether the date itself is included. “Days until May 1” usually means the number of dates you still have to cross before that morning arrives: the difference between the two calendar dates.
