May has 31 days and is the fifth month. In 2026, May 1 is a Friday and May 31 is a Sunday. The month holds late spring in the north and late autumn in the south.
How it works
A May calendar is a 31-day grid with holidays that people actually use. Unlike August, May in the United States is not empty of federal Mondays. The last Monday is Memorial Day. In 2026 that Monday is May 25. The month still has 31 numbered days; one of them is a federal holiday.
Because May 1, 2026 is a Friday, the first weekend is May 2–3. The Sundays of May 2026 are the 3rd, 10th, 17th, 24th, and 31st. Five Sundays. Mother’s Day in the United States is the second Sunday of May, so in 2026 it is May 10. That rule is a Sunday count, not a fixed number like the 25th of December.
May does not gain a day in a leap year. February already took that job. You can trust the 31. You cannot trust last year’s weekdays. May 1, 2025 was a Thursday; May 1, 2026 is a Friday. One shift right on a Sunday-start grid.
Holidays that actually sit in May
Two widely kept United States dates live in this month, and they work by different rules: Mother’s Day: second Sunday of May (May 10 in 2026). Memorial Day: last Monday of May (May 25 in 2026). May 31, 2026 is also a Sunday, the fifth Sunday of the month, and it is not Memorial Day.
Memorial Day is a Monday on purpose. It makes a three-day weekend with the Saturday and Sunday before it. In 2026 those dates are May 23–25. Do not move Memorial Day to the 31st because the 31st is a Sunday and “feels like an ending.” The rule is last Monday, not last day.
May Day on the 1st is a separate tradition in many countries and does not close federal offices in the United States. If your May calendar is for a United States workplace, May 1, 2026 is an ordinary Friday unless your own contract says otherwise.
How May’s weeks line up
A Sunday-start May 2026 calendar needs six rows: the 1st and 2nd sit on the first row with empty Sunday–Thursday cells, and the 31st sits alone on the last row under Sunday. A Monday-start grid is tidier this year, because the month begins on Friday and ends on Sunday, but the dates do not move.
If you are counting workdays, start from the weekday, not from a hope that May is “a light month.” 31 days include four full weeks plus extra. Memorial Day removes one weekday from a United States federal calendar. The other weekdays remain. A timesheet that assumes five workdays in the week of May 25, 2026 is already wrong by a day.
May will give you a Sunday for Mother’s Day and a Monday for Memorial Day in the same month; the calendar is showing off, not repeating itself. Toward the end of May the northern season is late spring, and in some years the air already feels like early summer. That feeling is weather. The month name does not change when the heat arrives early. Keep planting dates and exam dates on the numbered boxes, not on the mood.
