March holidays
March holidays are a mix of fixed dates and movable feasts. International Women’s Day is 8 March. St Patrick’s Day is 17 March. Easter, Holi, and some labour Mondays move. Check the country, not a generic March poster.
How it works
Holidays in March do not share one theme. Some are pinned to a number. Some follow the moon, the equinox, or a Monday rule. A list titled “March holidays” that treats every named day as a day off is a poster, not a calendar. International Women’s Day on 8 March is a public holiday in some countries and an ordinary working Tuesday in others. St Patrick’s Day on 17 March is a public holiday in Ireland; in the United States it is a parade date, not a federal close.
The March equinox sits around 20 or 21 March. Nowruz, the new year in Iranian and related calendars, is observed at that equinox. It is a public holiday in countries that keep it, and it is not St Patrick’s Day with different food. Holi follows a lunar calendar and often falls in March, not on a fixed Gregorian number. Western Easter can fall in March or April; when it is in March, Good Friday and Easter Monday become March holidays in countries that close for them. In other years those Christian dates wait until April and March is quieter.
The United States does not have a federal “March holiday” the way it has a September Labor Day. US daylight saving time begins on the second Sunday in March in places that use it. That Sunday is a clock change, not a workers’ festival. Texas Independence Day is 2 March, a state commemorative date. None of those facts turns the whole month into a vacation.
Labour Mondays that wander into March
In Australia, Labour Day is a March Monday in some states and not in others. Western Australia uses the first Monday in March. Victoria uses the second Monday in March. Tasmania uses that same second Monday under the name Eight Hours Day. Queensland and the Northern Territory wait until May. New South Wales waits until October. If your “holidays in March” question is an Australian roster, name the state before you book the long weekend.

How to use a March list without lying to yourself
Start with the country. Then the state or province. Then the employer. A bank in Dublin and a bank in Dallas do not share 17 March. A factory in Yerevan and a factory in Ohio do not share 8 March. A payroll that only copies US federal holidays will look almost empty in March. A payroll in a country that closes for Women’s Day and for Easter will look full. Both payrolls are describing their own law.
Religious calendars need the year. “Holi is in March” is a habit, not a statute. “Easter is in March” is true only in years when the computus puts it there. Print the year on the list you actually hang. A recycled March poster from a year when Easter was 31 March will mislead a year when Easter is in April.
School breaks in March are often spring recess, not a civic holiday. They follow the district, not St Patrick. Do not tell a child that 17 March is a snow day equivalent in a district that never closed for it.
