The parade is a civic procession, not a store coupon. Macy’s employees staged the first one in 1924. It was billed as a Christmas parade then and settled on Thanksgiving Day as the annual morning. The line of march runs through Manhattan and finishes at Macy’s in Herald Square, at 34th Street. Floats, marching bands, performance groups, and giant character balloons fill the route. Santa Claus traditionally closes the march.

You watch from the sidewalk, from a window along the route, or on television. NBC has carried the national broadcast for decades. The televised morning is not the same object as standing on a kerb: cameras cut, hosts talk, and you lose the wait between units. The street still has to clear each balloon and float in order. Cold is part of the work. Thanksgiving in New York is late November. Dress for a long stand, not for a living-room sofa.
