Long weekend

A long weekend is an ordinary Saturday–Sunday with an extra day off stuck to Friday, Monday, or both. The extra day is usually a public holiday, a given day of leave, or a school closure.

How it works

The weekend, in ordinary speech, is Saturday and Sunday. The long weekend is that pair plus at least one adjacent weekday that is also off. A Friday holiday makes a three-day weekend behind it. A Monday holiday makes a three-day weekend ahead of it. A Friday and a Monday both off make a four-day span. Thursday Thanksgiving in the United States often pulls Friday with it at workplaces that close the day after; that is a long weekend that started on a Thursday, not a Saturday.

The long weekend is not a legal name in most calendars. The legal name is the holiday, if there is one, plus the weekend that happens to sit next to it. People still search the phrase because they are packing, booking a train, or asking whether Monday is off. Answer with the dates. The phrase alone does not survive a time zone or a workplace that stays open while the schools close.

A weekend with no extra day is not long. It is a weekend. Calling every Saturday a long weekend drains the words. Save them for the stretch that actually grew. A long weekend is a weekend that borrowed a weekday. If you cannot name the borrowed day, you are just hoping Friday quits early.

The May long weekend

May long weekend is a phrase with at least two common homes, and they are not the same Monday. In Canada it usually means the Victoria Day weekend: Victoria Day is the Monday before 25 May, a statutory holiday in much of the country, and the Saturday–Sunday before that Monday ride along in speech. In the United States the late-May three-day weekend is Memorial Day weekend, the last Monday in May. Both sit in May. They are not one date.

If you are writing an invitation, write the Monday’s name and the dates. “May long weekend” in a mixed Canadian–American group is how one household arrives a week early. Victoria Day cannot be the last Monday in May unless that last Monday is also the Monday before the 25th, which is a coincidence, not a rule. Memorial Day cannot be “the Monday before 25 May” unless the last Monday happens to fall there.

Ordinary long weekend: Friday or Monday off next to Saturday–Sunday. Canadian May long weekend: usually Victoria Day, the Monday before 25 May. U.S. late-May long weekend: Memorial Day, the last Monday in May.

Not a long weekend: a midweek holiday with both adjacent weekdays worked. Other Mays exist. A country that keeps Labour Day on 1 May will have a long weekend only when 1 May lands on Friday or Monday, or when the state moves the day off to a Monday. That is a May long weekend by arithmetic, not by the Canadian or American nickname. Name the holiday. Then the weekend has a spine.

How to use one without missing the day that made it long

Start with Friday evening only if Friday is actually off or you are leaving after work. A 9 a.m. Friday meeting is still a weekday plan even if Monday is a holiday. End with Monday night only if Monday is off. Guests who hear “the long weekend” will guess Friday, Saturday, Sunday, or Monday according to their own job. Put start and end on the invite.

Transit, clinics, and town desks often run a Sunday timetable on the holiday Monday, or they close. Shops may do the opposite and stay open for the travel rush. The long weekend is one shape on a family calendar and several shapes on a city calendar. Check the desk you need, not the picnic you want.

If you have to return on the Tuesday, the long weekend ended Monday night whether or not the mood did. Pack for the extra day you actually have. A four-day hope on a three-day holiday is how a Tuesday alarm feels personal. The calendar was not hiding. The phrase was doing too much work.
