What the lion is, and what it is not

The team is driven by drum, gong, and cymbals. Northern lion styles exist too; they are a different school, often hairier and more acrobatic in look. Neither is the dragon dance. The dragon is a long body on poles with many people. If you hired a dragon and a lion arrived, you hired the wrong animal.

A common shop ritual is cai qing, “plucking the greens”: lettuce or similar greens hung high, often with a red envelope, which the lion “eats” and scatters. The pun is that greens sound like wealth. The envelope is a fee and a blessing in one packet. The team that climbs for it is doing a job. It is not a wild animal, and it is not a priest. If your building cannot take a drum, say so before the troupe arrives. A silent lion is a costume in a bag.

How to watch without inventing a close

On the street, give the troupe room. The head needs a turning circle. Children who grab the mouth can hurt a dancer who cannot see their fingers. Photograph from the side. Do not step in to “help eat the lettuce.” That lettuce is the job. If you want a visit at a shop, book a licensed team and ask what they need: height of the greens, a power point, a time that does not block a fire exit. A viral video of a lion on a pile of chairs is not a safety manual.

The dance is folklore about scaring bad luck and waking a noisy year. English tellings often fold in the Nian beast that feared red and noise. That is a story used to explain the season. The troupe does not need the beast to have walked. The drum is real. U.S. federal offices do not close because a lion bowed at a mall. Inside China, what closes is the published Spring Festival holiday, not a separate lion statute. After the lantern night, the drum can still appear at a restaurant opening. That opening is not Chinese New Year repeating itself.
