Liberation day

How it works

The name is a type, not a global appointment. Each country that uses it is marking its own liberation from occupation or colonial rule, on the anniversary that country chose. The English label travels. The statute does not. A planner that prints “Liberation Day” with no flag has not told you when to take leave.

In Italy, 25 April is Liberation Day, a national public holiday. In 2026 it fell on Saturday; in 2027 it is Sunday 25 April, 234 days after 3 September 2026. In South Korea, 15 August is Liberation Day. In 2026 that Saturday was already past on 3 September; the next 15 August is Sunday 15 August 2027, 346 days away, with an observed weekday when the rules require one. In Kuwait, 26 February is Liberation Day. The next one after 3 September 2026 is Friday 26 February 2027, 176 days away.

The Netherlands marks 5 May as Bevrijdingsdag. In 2026 that Tuesday is an optional holiday on the national table, not a nationwide paid day off in every contract. Channel Islands calendars keep 9 May. Vietnam keeps 30 April as Liberation Day or Reunification Day. Albania keeps 29 November. Guam, a U.S. territory, keeps 21 July as Liberation Day. Those are different wars, different years, and different weekdays. They share a word.

Dates that actually exist

If you need a square, pick the country first, then the date. Do not average them. Do not move an April Italian holiday to August because a Korean calendar used the same English noun. Italy: 25 April each year.

Netherlands: 5 May; nationwide paid status depends on the year and the contract. Jersey and Guernsey: 9 May. Vietnam: 30 April. Guam: 21 July. South Korea: 15 August. Kuwait: 26 February. Albania: 29 November.

The United States has no federal Liberation Day. Independence Day is 4 July. That is a different name and a different story. Searching “liberation day” in an American box still often wants one of the foreign public holidays above, or Guam’s July date, not a hidden fifty-first federal Monday.

Liberation Day is a country name first and a calendar square second. Swap the country and you have swapped the holiday.

What the name is not

It is not Veterans Day (11 November in the United States). It is not Memorial Day (the last Monday in May in the United States). It is not D-Day, which is 6 June as a historical date, not a U.S. federal closing. A liberation anniversary can sit near those American marks on a world map and still be a different legal day in a different place.

Shops, banks, and schools follow the country you are standing in. An Italian 25 April closing does not shut a bank in Ohio. A Korean 15 August holiday does not move a Kuwaiti February date. If you are booking travel, put the country in the search, then the year, then the weekday. In 2027 several of these dates are Sundays, which already changes how a “day off” feels even when the statute still names that Sunday.
