How it works

The title is a time stamp. The program looks back at news from last week and airs tonight — on its night, which is Sunday. You do not need the episode list to use the calendar meaning. You need two pieces: which span counts as “last week,” and which clock time is “tonight.”

Tonight is the remaining part of the current civil day after the moment you speak. If you say it on Sunday evening, tonight is still that Sunday. The show’s slot is a late Sunday evening on HBO. If you say “tonight” on a Tuesday, you are not talking about the broadcast night unless you mean a replay. The original night is Sunday.

Last week is backward from today. It is not “the last seven days” unless you mean a rolling week. In ordinary speech, last week is the previous complete week. The hard part is where that week starts.

What last week means on a calendar

Two common week starts disagree about the label: Sunday start: last week is the most recently finished Sunday–Saturday block. Monday start (ISO-style): last week is the most recently finished Monday–Sunday block.

On Thursday, September 3, 2026, a Monday-start “last week” is Monday, August 24 through Sunday, August 30. A Sunday-start “last week” is Sunday, August 23 through Saturday, August 29. Same neighborhood of dates, one-day disagreement at each end. If you are filing a timesheet, pick the rule your workplace already uses. If you are talking to a person, say the dates.

A rolling “past seven days” from Thursday the 3rd would be August 27 through September 2. That span includes this week’s Monday–Wednesday. It is not last week. It is a week-long lookback. Useful for logs. Wrong as a translation of the phrase.

Last week ended before you woke up this Monday; if the story is still happening, it is this week, and the title will have to wait.

Sunday night, and the weeks with no episode

The show does not occupy every Sunday of the year. It runs in seasons, with gaps. A Sunday without a new episode is still a Sunday. Last week still happened. The calendar does not delete a week because a program is dark. If you are waiting for a new installment, check the current season’s Sunday, not the phrase “last week” by itself.

When an episode does air, it is a Sunday date on your grid. Put it on that Sunday evening, not on the Friday the headlines broke. The delay is the point of the title: the week closes, then the program talks. People who want the news the hour it happens are watching a different clock.

If you marked “last week” as a repeating event, you marked a moving target. Next Monday, a different seven dates will be last week. A repeating Sunday alarm is the right tool for the show. A repeating “last week” label is a phrase that chases itself around the year.
