Last day of ramadan

The last day of Ramadan is the final fasting day of the ninth Islamic month. The month is 29 or 30 days. Eid al-Fitr is the morning after, once Shawwal is confirmed.

when last day of summer

The last day of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere is 31 August: June, July, and August are the summer months on that civic clock. Astronomical summer ends at the September equinox, a moment on a clock, not a whole named holiday. On 3 September 2026 meteorological summer has already closed. Astronomical summer has not. Neither of those endings is the last day of Ramadan.

Ramadan is a lunar month. Summer is a season. They share the English word “last day” and almost nothing else. A search for the last day of summer wants a solstice, an equinox, or 31 August. This page answers the last fasting day of the ninth Islamic month. Mixing those clocks is how a picnic plan and a fast both miss their mark.

Ramadan 2026 already sat in February and March on the civil calendar. On 3 September 2026 that last fasting day is behind you. The next last day of Ramadan is in 2027, again on a date that will be confirmed by the Shawwal crescent or by the calendar your mosque follows. You cannot read it off a summer chart.

How the last Ramadan day is named

A lunar month runs twenty-nine or thirty dawns. Ramadan is the ninth. It begins when the month of Sha‘ban ends, by crescent sighting or by a published religious calendar. It ends when Shawwal begins. The last day of Ramadan is still a fast from dawn to sunset. The fast that day still breaks at maghrib. Eid al-Fitr is not that evening’s meal. Eid is the first day of Shawwal, the morning after the month, with its own prayer.

In 2026 communities did not all close the month on the same civil date. Some followed a calculated calendar, some a local sighting, some a national announcement. Public notices placed Eid al-Fitr around 19 to 21 March 2026. That spread is normal. It is not a defect in the month. A mosque announcement outranks a projection on a phone. The last fasting day is the day before the Eid your community actually prays.

Last day of Ramadan: the final dawn-to-sunset fast of the ninth month. Length of the month: 29 or 30 days, not a fixed Gregorian block. Eid al-Fitr: 1 Shawwal, the morning after, not another Ramadan fast.

Ramadan 2026: February–March on the civil calendar; already closed by 3 September 2026. Last day of Northern meteorological summer: 31 August, a different clock. Summer ends on a month-end or an equinox. Ramadan ends on a crescent. Using one chart for both is how you pack a picnic and miss Eid.

What the last day is not

It is not Eid. Gifts, new clothes, and the Eid prayer belong to the morning of Shawwal. Zakat al-fitr is due in time for the poor to use it on Eid, which means it is a duty of the close of Ramadan, not a substitute for the last fast. Night on the last Ramadan date is still Ramadan until the month is declared over; communities treat that night as the last of the month, then wake to Eid.

It is not the last day of summer, winter, or any Gregorian season. Because the Hijri year is shorter than the solar year, Ramadan moves earlier through the civil calendar, roughly ten to twelve days a year. A last Ramadan day that fell in a Northern summer in one decade will not stay there. The 2026 last day was in March. The next ones will keep walking.

It is not a worldwide public holiday by itself. Some countries treat the end of Ramadan and Eid as civic closes. Many do not. The religious fact is the last fast and the Eid that follows. Shop shutters follow the town you are in.
