Lady guadalupe day
Our Lady of Guadalupe is kept on 12 December. The feast recalls the 1531 apparitions at Tepeyac, now in Mexico City. It is not a U.S. federal holiday.
How it works
Catholic calendars in the United States keep 12 December as the Feast of Our Lady of Guadalupe. Elsewhere it may be an optional memorial. The title names Mary as she is remembered in the Guadalupe story: apparitions to Juan Diego on Tepeyac Hill in December 1531, a request for a church on that hill, and an image on Juan Diego’s tilma, the cloak he opened before Bishop Juan de Zumárraga. The basilica that now stands there is a major pilgrimage site. 12 December is the date of the last apparition in the traditional account and the date of the feast.
Juan Diego was canonized in 2002 by Pope John Paul II. John Paul II also named Our Lady of Guadalupe patroness of the Americas. Mexican and Mexican American communities keep the day with Mass, mañanitas before dawn, processions, roses, and visits to a parish image if they cannot reach Tepeyac. The day is religious and cultural at once. A U.S. bank stays open. A parish in a city with a large Mexican community may treat the week as a high feast even though civil offices do not close.
12 December 2026 is a Saturday. 12 December 2027 is a Sunday. When the 12th is a Sunday, Sunday Mass and the Guadalupe feast share the calendar in ways a parish bulletin will spell out. Do not guess from a 2024 memory. The date of the feast does not move to Monday. Pilgrims who want the basilica on the 12th plan for a crowd. Distance does not cancel the date. A neighborhood Mass is still 12 December.
Tepeyac, the tilma, and the basilica
The traditional narrative is short. Juan Diego, an Indigenous convert, meets Mary on Tepeyac. She speaks to him in his language and asks for a church. The bishop wants a sign. On 12 December she tells Juan Diego to gather flowers on the hill; he carries them in his tilma; when he opens the cloak, the flowers fall and the image is on the cloth. That image is the one venerated in the basilica. Faith receives the story as apparition. History can at least say this: the cult, the image, and the shrine have been at the center of Mexican Catholic life for centuries, and 12 December is when that life goes public.
Roses, candles, and the song of mañanitas are the ordinary language of the day. Dancers and processions appear where the community is large enough to take the street. None of that is required to keep the feast. Mass and the date will do. If you are not Catholic, you can still know what the day is without pretending it is a federal Monday.
Feast date: 12 December every year. Story date: apparitions at Tepeyac, December 1531. Not a U.S. federal holiday; parishes and families keep it anyway. Not 8 December, which is the Immaculate Conception.
Juan Diego’s feast is 9 December, a different square in the same week. Roses in December were the argument. The cloak was the signature. The basilica is the mailbox that never closed.
December 12 is not December 8
The Immaculate Conception on 8 December is a U.S. holy day of obligation. Guadalupe on 12 December is not on the U.S. precept list. You may go to both. You owe Mass on the 8th. You are invited, not civilly compelled, on the 12th. People mash the two because they sit in the same Advent week and both honor Mary. They are different titles. One is a dogma about Mary’s own conception. The other is a Mexican apparition and a continental patronage.
If you needed a civil closing, look at Christmas. If you needed a holy day of obligation, look at 8 December and at Sunday. If you needed Guadalupe, lock 12 December, find a Mass or a procession, and do not wait for a bank poster. Mexico City’s basilica will be full. Your local parish may be full too. Arrive as if the date were real, because it is.
