Kentucky country day

How it works

People type Kentucky country day as if it were a civic date, the way one types Pioneer Day or Kentucky Derby weekend. It is a campus. Kentucky Country Day School, often KCD, sits at 4100 Springdale Road in eastern Jefferson County, Louisville. It is an independent, coeducational, college-preparatory day school. The motto is Citizen, Scholar, Steward. The athletic name is Bearcats. Royal blue and gold are the colors.

The school was formed in 1972 from predecessor Louisville schools, including Kentucky Home School for Girls and Louisville Country Day School, with other local institutions in the same merger story. The first coed class graduated in 1973. The present campus, more than eighty acres, opened in 1978 after earlier years on split sites. A day school means students go home at night; it is not a boarding school and not a public-district calendar.

“Country day” in U.S. school names is a type: an independent day school, often on a large suburban campus. Other cities have their own country day schools with no link to this one. A search for hours, snow closings, or exam week is a search for KCD’s published calendar, not for a Kentucky statute.

School time is not holiday time

Kentucky public holidays and U.S. federal holidays do not automatically shut an independent school. KCD may align some breaks with Thanksgiving, winter recess, or Independence Day, and it may sit in session when a state office is closed. The only list that answers “is Kentucky Country Day off today?” is the list the school posts for that academic year. From Thursday, 3 September 2026, a visitor should treat the campus as in its fall term unless the school’s own notice says otherwise — and that notice, not this page, is the authority for a given snow day or in-service date.

Admissions, tuition, bell schedules, and sports start times change by year. They belong on the school site. This page will not invent a first-day-of-school square or a graduation weekend. Those dates are facts only when the school prints them.

Decide whether you meant the Louisville school or a civic holiday. If you meant a holiday, this is the wrong name. For closures, read the current KCD academic calendar, not a Kentucky state-office list.

For another “country day” school in another state, use that school’s name. They do not share a calendar. Federal Labor Day, 7 September 2026, may or may not match KCD’s own Monday. Check the campus, not only OPM. A school can occupy eighty acres and still not be a holiday. The map is a campus map.
