June holidays
June holidays in the United States centre on Juneteenth, 19 June, a federal holiday. Flag Day is 14 June. Father’s Day is the third Sunday. The June 19th holiday is Juneteenth, not a floating Monday.
How it works
June is the first month of meteorological summer in the Northern Hemisphere. The civil calendar in the United States puts one statutory federal holiday in that month: Juneteenth National Independence Day, 19 June. The date is the number 19. It does not move to the third Monday. If 19 June is a Friday, the federal day is Friday. If it is a Saturday, the anniversary is still the 19th and the observed federal weekday is the Friday before. If it is a Sunday, the observed weekday is the Monday after.
In 2026, 19 June was a Friday, so the June 19th holiday and the observed federal day were the same square. In 2027, 19 June is a Saturday; the observed federal weekday is Friday 18 June. People who type “June 19th holiday” and then take Monday off in a Saturday year are using the wrong observed rule. Saturday holidays observe Friday, not Monday.
Flag Day, 14 June, marks the 1777 adoption of the Stars and Stripes. It is not a federal closing. Father’s Day is the third Sunday of June: 21 June in 2026, 20 June in 2027. It is a greeting-card Sunday, not a Federal Reserve holiday. King Kamehameha Day on 11 June is a public holiday in Hawaii, not a mainland federal day. Do not file Hawaii’s 11 June under the national Juneteenth row.
The June map, not a blur called summer
Memorial Day is the last Monday of May. Independence Day is 4 July. June sits between them and is not a substitute for either. A cookout in the third week of June can be Juneteenth, Father’s Day, or both in a year when they neighbour each other. In 2026, Friday 19 June and Sunday 21 June sat in the same weekend stretch. That is a calendar coincidence, not a merger of the two names.
The June solstice, which opens astronomical summer, falls around 20 or 21 June. It is an astronomical instant, not a civic holiday. Do not move Juneteenth to the solstice. Do not move Father’s Day to the 19th because the weekend looks tidy.
Juneteenth: 19 June, US federal holiday. 2026 Friday 19 June; 2027 Saturday 19 June, federal observed Friday 18 June. Flag Day: 14 June, commemorative, offices open. Father’s Day: third Sunday — 21 June 2026, 20 June 2027.
Hawaii: 11 June, King Kamehameha Day, a state public holiday there. Not Memorial Day (May) and not 4 July. Put 19 June on the year you care about and note the weekday. If you need a closed federal desk, apply the Friday-or-Monday observed rule only when the 19th is a weekend. Add Father’s Day by counting Sundays, not by copying the 19th. Leave 4 July in July.
What closes in June, and what does not
On the observed Juneteenth weekday, federal offices close. Regular USPS delivery does not run. Most bank lobbies follow the Federal Reserve holiday. Stock exchanges have treated the federal day as a full close in ordinary years; that is an exchange notice, not a picnic rule. Grocery stores stay open. A city parade can run in a park while a teller window is dark.
Flag Day and Father’s Day do not close those counters. A hardware store may hang flags on the 14th and still take a debit card. A restaurant may be crowded on Father’s Sunday and still be a restaurant. Southern Hemisphere June is winter. The US June table is written for the US civil calendar. Weather where you stand is local; the numbered holidays are not.
Juneteenth is a date with a name. Summer is a season without a clerk. Do not ask the season for a day off. If you are counting nights until “June holidays,” name the square: 11 June in Hawaii, 14 June for the flag, 19 June for Juneteenth, the third Sunday for fathers. A blur labelled June will land you at the solstice with no closed mail and no federal table to back you up.
