How it works

John Chapman was born on 26 September 1774 in Leominster, Massachusetts. He died on 18 March 1845 near Fort Wayne, Indiana. He planted apple nurseries as he moved west through Pennsylvania into Ohio and Indiana, and he was a missionary of the Church of the New Jerusalem. The folk name Johnny Appleseed is the name the calendar borrowed. The man was Chapman. The trees were nursery stock, often grown for cider, not a cartoon trail of random seeds tossed from a bag.

Unofficial American lists therefore had a biography to hang a date on. They did not get a statute. Banks stay open. Schools stay in session unless they planned an orchard lesson of their own. You can read a children’s book, bake something with apples, or walk past a tree and still have an ordinary weekday underneath.

September 26, and the March date lists also print

26 September is his birthday. In 2026 that date is Saturday 26 September, 23 days from Thursday 3 September. In 2027 it is Sunday 26 September. The birthday does not slide to Monday. If you want the date that matches the birth record, use 26 September.

Many U.S. food-and-folk calendars also print 11 March as Johnny Appleseed Day. 11 March is not his death date; he died on 18 March. This page will not invent a founder for the March square. If a school flyer already uses 11 March, you are not required to argue the family onto September to be decent. If you want the date with a documented birth, use 26 September. 11 March 2026 was a Wednesday and has already passed. The next 11 March is Thursday 11 March 2027.

Death date, not used as the folk day: 18 March 1845. Fort Wayne keeps Chapman’s name on local memory and on a festival that is a separate ticket from the unofficial national square. Festival weekends have their own hours. They do not rewrite 26 September, and they do not turn March into a federal closing.

What the day is not

It is not Arbor Day, which U.S. states set on their own spring dates for tree planting as a civic act. It is not a harvest festival. September 26 in the northern year is early autumn, when apples may already be in season in some districts and still green in others. March is late winter or early spring there. Pick the date you will actually keep, and pick fruit that exists in your kitchen. A canned apple in March is still an apple. An empty orchard in September is still Chapman’s month on the list.

Southern Hemisphere seasons reverse the weather around those squares. The biography does not reverse. Chapman remains an American frontier planter. Your climate decides whether the day feels like cider weather or like a supermarket bag.

A nursery takes years. The unofficial day only takes a date. Do not confuse the tree’s clock with the calendar’s.
