How it works

A year is twelve months. January sits first, before February. It is a long month: 31 days, the same length as March, May, July, August, October, and December. Those 31 dates still have to line up with weekdays, so the month is drawn as a grid. Each cell is a date. Each column is a weekday. Empty cells at the start belong to December of the previous year. Empty cells at the end belong to February, not to a 32 January.

Which weekday gets 1 January depends on the year. The month does not own a fixed opening day. Once you know the weekday of the first, the rest of the month follows in order. There is no skipped date in the middle. January is always 1 through 31. Leap day, when it exists, is in February. It does not steal a day from January and it does not add one.

Two common grids exist. A week that starts on Sunday puts Saturday at the end of the row. A week that starts on Monday puts Sunday at the end. The dates do not change. Only the columns move. Pick one convention for the whole page. Mixing them makes Wednesday look like Thursday, which is a poor way to start a year.

January always: dates 1 through 31. 1 January: New Year's Day on the civil calendar in common use. The next month always begins on 1 February, the day after 31 January. The weekday of 1 February is the weekday after 31 January.

To build the grid by hand, find the weekday of 1 January, write that date in the matching column, then fill rightward and downward until 31. Leftover boxes stay blank. Those blanks are not missing days of January. They are days that do not belong to this month.

January 2026 and 2027 on the grid

1 January 2026 is a Thursday. 31 January 2026 is a Saturday. If your week begins on Monday, the first row has empty Monday, Tuesday, and Wednesday cells, then Thursday the 1st through Sunday the 4th. The month then runs through Saturday the 31st. If your week begins on Sunday, Thursday the 1st sits later in the first row, and Saturday the 31st closes a later row. Same dates. Different empty corners.

1 January 2027 is a Friday. 31 January 2027 is a Sunday. February 2027 then begins on Monday 1 February, because 31 January is Sunday. Neither 2026 nor 2027 is a leap year, so February stops at 28 in both. The next leap year after those two is 2028, which lengthens February, not January. People looking up a January calendar usually want the weekday the year begins on, and where the first weekend falls. 2026 begins on Thursday, so the first Saturday is 3 January and the first Sunday is 4 January. 2027 begins on Friday, so the first Saturday is 2 January and the first Sunday is 3 January.

January is 31 days even when the year is new and the planner is still blank. The grid does not owe you a shorter month because December was long. 31 January is always followed by 1 February. If you are counting workdays “this January,” count the weekdays that actually fall on 1 through 31 in that year. Do not budget a 32nd, and do not borrow a day from February to make the month look even. The calendar's first page is a 31-day page. Fill it, then turn.
