How it works

Jan holiday is a short search for “what day off sits in January.” The federal list is short. 1 January is New Year’s Day, a fixed date. When it falls on a Saturday, federal workers typically observe Friday; when it falls on a Sunday, they typically observe Monday. The public date remains 1 January. The other federal January holiday is Martin Luther King Jr. Day, the third Monday of the month, a moving date between 15 January and 21 January. In 2026 New Year’s Day is Thursday, 1 January. The third Monday is 19 January. From Thursday, 3 September 2026, that Monday is still four months ahead.

Schools, banks, and mail follow those two federal days more often than they follow unofficial January observances. State offices can add their own January dates. A workplace can close between the 1st and the 2nd by custom. None of that creates a third federal holiday.

The January 19 holiday

Jan 19 holiday in a U.S. search is usually Martin Luther King Jr. Day in a year when the third Monday is the 19th. 2026 is such a year: Monday, 19 January. Federal offices close. The Postal Service does not deliver. Banks that follow the Federal Reserve holiday calendar close. The stock market is shut for MLK Day. Many school districts are closed. Private shops set their own hours; plenty stay open.

19 January is also the birthday of Robert E. Lee (1807). Texas marks Confederate Heroes Day on 19 January. Alabama and Mississippi observe Robert E. Lee Day on the same third Monday as King Day. Florida lists 19 January as Robert E. Lee Day without closing offices for it. Those state names do not rewrite the federal holiday. If you needed the civil-rights Monday, you want the third Monday, which in 2026 happens to be the 19th. In 2027 that Monday is 18 January, and the 19th is a Tuesday.

January gives the United States two federal rests. The other twenty-nine days still go to work.

Other January days people mix in

Epiphany is 6 January on the Western church calendar. It is not a U.S. federal holiday. Lunar New Year can fall in January; in other years it falls in February. It is not on the federal list. A “national day” posted on social media on a random January weekday is almost never a bank close. If the question is “do I have Monday off,” look at the third Monday and at New Year’s Day, then look at your employer.

In 2025 the third Monday was 20 January, so the 19th that year was a Sunday, not the federal King Day. Copying “January 19 is always the holiday” from a 2026 calendar into another year is how this search goes wrong.
