How it works

In the United Kingdom the crown passes at a death or an abdication. Charles III became king on 8 September 2022, when Elizabeth II died. The coronation came later, on 6 May 2023, because the ceremony takes planning, mourning, and a guest list. Camilla was crowned queen in the same service. The Archbishop of Canterbury conducted it. St Edward’s Crown was placed on the king’s head. Processions moved between Buckingham Palace and the Abbey. The balcony appearance followed. That Saturday was coronation day. The previous Monday was not, and the following Monday was an extra bank holiday, not a second crowning.

Elizabeth II became queen on 6 February 1952. She was crowned on 2 June 1953, also in Westminster Abbey. That June day is the other modern British coronation people still mean when they say “coronation day.” Charles was a child at his mother’s crowning. He was the 40th reigning monarch crowned in the Abbey. William the Conqueror’s 1066 crowning is the conventional start of that Abbey series. A coronation is a church service and a state occasion. It does not create the monarch. It shows the monarch.

There is no annual Coronation Day on the civil calendar. You do not get another one every May. The next British coronation day will be the day the next monarch is crowned, which is not a date anyone can print in a five-year planner without guessing. Accession is earlier than the crown

People mix three clocks. Accession is immediate: “The king is dead. Long live the king.” Proclamation is the public naming, in Charles’s case the Accession Council and proclamations in the days after 8 September 2022. Coronation is the later anointing and crowning. If you are dating a coin, a law, or a reign, accession is the start. If you are dating a party, a procession, or a broadcast, coronation day is the start.

6 May 2023 was a Saturday. The UK government added a bank holiday on Monday 8 May 2023 so the weekend could hold street parties and the extra travel. That Monday was not the coronation. It was time off around the coronation. Schools and many offices that closed on the Monday were closing for the holiday, not because a crown was being set down again.

Ask which country. A British coronation is not a Dutch investiture. Ask which clock: accession, proclamation, or crowning. For the present UK king, accession is 8 September 2022; coronation is 6 May 2023.

For Elizabeth II, accession is 6 February 1952; coronation is 2 June 1953. Do not expect an annual repeat. The next day is the next reign’s ceremony. You become monarch at a death. You become a picture on a souvenir mug at a crowning. Those mornings are years apart, and only one of them is coronation day.

When “today” is coronation day

Today is coronation day only if a coronation is actually happening, or if you are marking an anniversary of one. On an ordinary 3 September, the honest answer is no. On 6 May you may be marking the 2023 anniversary; that is a memory, not a new crowning. On 2 June you may be marking 1953. Street parties, school lessons, and television repeats can keep an anniversary. They do not reopen Westminster Abbey for a second anointing.

If you needed a regular UK spring holiday, look at the early-May bank holiday, not at a crown. If you needed the 2023 extra Monday, that was 8 May 2023, already spent. If you needed the service itself, the date is 6 May 2023, in the Abbey, with a liturgy that mixed old oaths and new music. If you needed a different country’s ceremony, this page is the wrong map. Name the country, then the rite, then the date. “It’s coronation day” without those three is a costume, not a calendar.
