Eighty-four years is a span of 84 calendar years. In James Cameron’s 1997 film Titanic, Rose says it has been 84 years since 1912; 1996 minus 1912 is 84.

The search “its.been 84 years” is the film line with a stray dot. Old Rose, played by Gloria Stuart, begins her story with that count. The framing year in the film is 1996. The ship’s story is 1912. Subtract: 1996 − 1912 = 84. The arithmetic is ordinary year subtraction, not a special movie calendar.
RMS Titanic struck an iceberg on 14 April 1912 and sank on 15 April 1912. The film uses that maiden voyage as history and invents Rose and Jack as characters. The 84 is the gap the script put between the sinking year and the framing year. It is not a claim that the actress was 84, and it is not a claim about today’s year.

Add 84 years to a birth date by adding 84 to the year and keeping the month and day when they exist. 8 March 1942 plus 84 years is 8 March 2026. 29 February only exists in a leap year; an anniversary that began on 29 February lands on 28 February or 1 March in common years, depending on the rule you chose, because there is no 29 February to keep.
People paste the line onto any old event: a school, a job, a joke from last month. The meme is the tone, not the number. If the event was not 84 years ago, the honest count is the subtraction you actually have. The film number does not travel with the joke unless the dates match.
From 1912 to 2026 is 114 years, not 84. If you are counting from the sinking to this year, do not keep 84. Keep 2026 − 1912 = 114, and then adjust for month and day if you need a tighter span than the year difference.
