Islamic new year
Islamic New Year is 1 Muharram, the first day of the Hijri year. It is not Chinese New Year. The two festivals sit on different calendars and different moods.
what is chinese new year
Chinese New Year is Spring Festival: fireworks, reunion dinner, red on the door, an animal year on the Chinese lunisolar clock. The first day in 2026 was 17 February. The next is 6 February 2027. Searches for “is today Chinese New Year” and “is today China new year” want that lunar morning. On 3 September 2026 that morning is not today. Islamic New Year is not hiding inside those questions. It is a separate first day on a separate lunar calendar.
The Chinese year is lunisolar: extra months keep it near the seasons, so Spring Festival stays in winter. The Islamic year is purely lunar: twelve moons, no leap month to chase the harvest, so 1 Muharram walks about eleven days earlier each Gregorian year. That is why one new year stays in January or February and the other tours the solar seasons. Mixing them in a search box does not mix them on the wall.
What 1 Muharram actually is
The Hijri calendar counts from the Hijra: the Prophet Muhammad’s migration from Mecca to Medina in 622 CE. Year one is that epoch. 1 Muharram is day one of month one. It opens a numbered Islamic year. It is not Eid al-Fitr and not Eid al-Adha. Those are feasts with their own rites. The new year is often quieter: a date, a sermon, a reflection on time, in some places a public holiday, in others an ordinary workday with a religious mark on it.
Muharram is also a sacred month, and the tenth day, Ashura, is more heavily marked than the first in many communities. Sunni practice includes a recommended fast around Ashura. Shia communities mourn the martyrdom of Husayn at Karbala on that tenth day. Those are not the new year’s party. Flattening 1 Muharram into Ashura, or into Chinese New Year, is how a calendar becomes a mash.
Islamic New Year: 1 Muharram, Hijri calendar, epoch 622 CE. Chinese New Year: Spring Festival, Chinese lunisolar calendar, winter new moon. 1 Muharram 1448 AH: June 2026 on the civil calendar, already past.
Next 1 Muharram: early June 2027, named by the calendar or sighting you follow. U.S. federal offices: open. Some Muslim-majority states gazette the day. Because communities differ by a day on moon sighting versus calculated tables, this page will not pretend one civil square is sealed for every country. Umm al-Qura and other published tables placed 1 Muharram 1448 in mid-June 2026. Treat 2027 the same way: a window in early June, then the announcement you actually use.
A quiet first of Muharram is still a new year. It does not have to sound like firecrackers to count.
How to greet it without borrowing the wrong feast
English “Islamic New Year” and “Hijri New Year” are clear. Arabic names the day as the head of the Hijri year. Do not send Gong Xi Fa Cai. Do not send “Happy Horse Year.” Do not send Eid Mubarak unless it is Eid. If you are not sure of the tone in that household, a simple “Islamic New Year” with a wish for a good year is enough. Some families do not treat the day as a greeting occasion at all. Follow the house.
If you needed a day off in the United States, you ask an employer. The federal list does not include 1 Muharram. If you needed to know whether today is Chinese New Year, look at the Chinese lunar first day, not at Muharram. If you needed to know whether today is Islamic New Year, look at 1 Muharram in your community’s table. On 3 September 2026, neither first day is today.
