If you asked “what international day is it today” and meant this one, the test is the date: is today 1 May? In early September 2026 it is not. 1 May 2026 was a Friday and has passed. The next 1 May is Saturday 1 May 2027. Leap years do not move 1 May. The day does not slide to a Monday unless a given country’s labour law says it observes a nearby weekday.

The date commemorates the fight for the eight-hour day and the Haymarket events in Chicago in 1886. A general strike for eight hours began on 1 May 1886. On 4 May a bomb exploded at a rally in Haymarket Square; police fired; deaths followed on both sides. Eight anarchists were convicted; four were hanged in 1887. In 1889 the first congress of the Second International in Paris called for international demonstrations on 1 May. The day became a repeating workers’ holiday in many countries.

May 1 is also older European May Day, a spring custom with poles and flowers that is not the same as a labour march. Hawaii’s Lei Day sits on 1 May as a cultural observance, not a substitute for the labour date. Name which May 1 you mean before you pack a picnic or a placard.

May 1 is not U.S. Labor Day

The United States keeps a federal holiday called Labor Day on the first Monday in September. Congress created that Monday in 1894. In 2026 it falls on Monday 7 September, four days after 3 September 2026. Canada also uses a September labour Monday. That September Monday is not International Workers’ Day. International Workers’ Day remains 1 May even in countries that do not give it off.

In the United States, 1 May is an ordinary civil weekday unless it lands on a weekend or a workplace chooses an event. Unions and groups may still rally. Federal offices follow the September Monday, not the May Friday. In many other countries — across Europe, Latin America, Africa, and Asia — 1 May is a statutory day off, sometimes called Labour Day or May Day. China’s labour holiday is built around 1 May as well, with the exact run of days off set by the state for that year.

How the day is kept

Where 1 May is a public holiday, banks and many offices close. Parades, wreaths, and speeches are common. Where it is not, the date is still the date: a rally, a union hall, or an ordinary shift. Do not treat a closed bakery in Paris as proof that a bakery in Ohio is closed. Do not treat an Ohio rally as proof that Ohio has made 1 May a paid holiday.

If you are counting days until the next 1 May from 3 September 2026, you are counting to 1 May 2027. If you are counting to the U.S. federal labour Monday, you are counting to 7 September 2026. Those are two clocks. Mix them and you will stand on a sidewalk on the wrong month.
