International day of friendship

what international day is it today

Today is the International Day of Friendship only if the civil date is 30 July. From Thursday 3 September 2026 that square has already passed: 30 July 2026 was a Thursday. The next one is Friday 30 July 2027. On any other date the honest answer for this particular international day is no, even if you already sent a kind message.

The United Nations General Assembly placed friendship on 30 July. The date is a named square for a civic idea: friendship between persons and between peoples. It is not a bank close. Offices, mail, and schools follow ordinary hours unless a local group booked a hall. A workplace that runs a lunch is making a workplace choice. A workplace that does nothing is still on 30 July.

International days share the calendar with other UN dates. Sharing the word international does not merge them. If you needed a different UN square, look up that square. This page is 30 July.

July 30 is not the August Sunday

English also uses Friendship Day for an unofficial U.S. and popular-South-Asia custom on the first Sunday in August. That Sunday moves. 30 July does not. Sending the UN greeting on the August Sunday, or the Sunday greeting on 30 July, is how two honest dates start a pointless argument. National Best Friends Day on unofficial U.S. lists is 8 June, a third square. Galentine’s Day is 13 February. Four names, four jobs.

Paraguay and some other listings keep 30 July as a friendship date in local use as well. That overlap does not convert 30 July into a U.S. federal holiday. It does not cancel the August Sunday for people who already keep that Sunday. It only says the UN label on this page is the July date.

UN International Day of Friendship: 30 July every year. 2026: Thursday 30 July (already past from 3 September 2026). 2027: Friday 30 July. Other friendship squares: 8 June; first Sunday in August; 13 February. Different pages.

Status: observance, not a closing of banks. The UN picked 30 July so friendship would have a date that is not a greeting-card Sunday. A kind note on 31 July is still kind. It is just a day late for this label.

How to keep 30 July

A call, a meal, or a repaired silence is the whole brief. The date does not require a purchased card, a matching shirt, or a ranking of friends. Missing 30 July does not cancel a friendship. The next 30 July is the next 30 July. If both people are free on a nearby Saturday, that Saturday can still do the work; it simply will not be the UN square.

Do not park the reminder on a random “friends Monday.” Do not file it under Pride, under a national day, or under Chinese New Year because a search box grouped the word day. 30 July in 2026 sat in northern summer and southern winter. The friendship did not change hemisphere. The map did.

If you wanted a public holiday, this is the wrong listing. If you wanted the named international day, lock 30 July and leave the August Sunday on its own row. If you only have the word friendship and no calendar, ask which square your friend already uses. The relationship will not grade you on a resolution number. The calendar will still finish.
