International day of dance

International Day of Dance is 29 April, the same square as International Dance Day. Spring 2026 already used that Wednesday. The next square is Thursday 29 April 2027.

what international day is it today

3 September 2026 is an ordinary Thursday. It is not International Day of Dance. That date is 29 April every year. “What international day is it today” wants whichever UN, UNESCO-partner, or civic list printed a name on this morning. This page answers one art date: 29 April, also listed as International Dance Day, not a national closing and not a random studio Saturday.

The Dance Committee of the International Theatre Institute, UNESCO’s main partner for the performing arts, created International Dance Day in 1982. The chosen square is the birthday of Jean-Georges Noverre (1727–1810), the ballet reformer often called the creator of modern ballet. The day is a celebration date for dance, not a public holiday. Theatres, schools, and offices follow ordinary hours unless they booked a performance or a class.

29 April 2026 was a Wednesday; that square has already passed. 29 April 2027 is a Thursday. The date does not move to Friday for ticket sales. If 29 April is a Sunday, the observance is Sunday. A studio that holds a gala on the nearest weekend is adding a local night. It is not rewriting 29 April.

International Dance Day is the same square

International Dance Day is the name the International Theatre Institute uses. International Day of Dance is the same 29 April in other English. Searches that mix “dance day,” “day of dance,” and “international dance day” are not three calendars. They are one April date with shuffled words. The International Dance Council has also promoted Dance Day on 29 April. That is still the Noverre birthday, not a second feast in another month.

Each year the Institute circulates a message from a dancer or choreographer. The 2026 message was written by Crystal Pite. The text is a letter, not a law. You do not need to read it to stand up and move. You do need 29 April if you want this particular international label.

Fixed date: 29 April every year. Official ITI name: International Dance Day, created in 1982. Tied to Jean-Georges Noverre’s birthday, 29 April 1727. 2027 weekday: Thursday. 2026 was Wednesday. Not a public holiday and not a school closing by itself.

Northern late April is spring in much of the temperate world: longer light than March, still short of midsummer. That is the outdoor weather if a company dances in a square. Indoor stages do not need the weather. Southern late April is autumn. The date does not flip to October to follow the season.

29 April will not teach you a step. It will only name a morning on which a lot of people remember that dancing is work, play, and a language without a visa.

What a company, a school, or a kitchen can do

Companies and theatres sometimes read the year’s message before a show, hold a free class, or stage a mixed bill on or near 29 April. Those events are local. A poster in another city is not your ticket. A school that puts dance into a lesson that week is using the date as a hook. It is not required to cancel maths.

At home the day is as small as a song in the kitchen or as large as a ticket you already bought. You do not need a costume. You do not need a partner. You do not need to be young. The Institute’s point is that dance crosses political and language lines. A living-room step still counts as movement. A professional premiere still counts as work. They share the date without sharing a wage.

From 3 September 2026 you are between two Aprils. Do not treat a September Thursday as a secret dance day because a feed mixed its lists. If you needed World Ballet Day or a local festival, those are other announced dates. This page is 29 April only.
