International day kiss
International Kissing Day, also called World Kiss Day, is 6 July. The custom started in the United Kingdom and never became a closing day.
what international day is it today
Today is International Kissing Day only if the date is 6 July. In 2026 that was Monday 6 July. In 2027 it is Tuesday 6 July. “What international day is it today” on any other morning is a no for this page. The United Nations has a long list of official international days. This kiss date is not one of those UN observances. It is a popular name that spread from British use and was taken up more widely in the early 2000s.
Valentine’s Day, 14 February, is a different mark with a church history and a huge commercial layer. Some writers also call 14 February a kiss day. That does not move 6 July. In parts of India, Kiss Day is kept on 13 February as part of a Valentine week. That is a third row. Do not spend 6 July on a February card and call the July date done, or skip July because February already had a heart.
6 July is also the date on which some Eastern Orthodox calendars keep a feast of Saint Valentine. That overlap is a calendar coincidence people notice after the fact. It does not make International Kissing Day a church feast, and it does not make the Orthodox date a marketing campaign.
A British nickname that travelled
British newspapers were already talking about a kissing day around 6 July by 2000. Wider international pick-up is usually dated to the following decade. Exact founding paperwork is thin, as it is for many unofficial days. What can be said without padding is the date, the British start, the later spread, and the unofficial status. A flash mob in a square is an event someone organised. It is not a law.
July in the Northern Hemisphere is high summer; in the Southern Hemisphere it is winter. The gesture does not change hemisphere. The weather does. A public kiss is also a consent question, not a dare from a hashtag. The day does not cancel ordinary manners, workplace rules, or the right to refuse.
Date: 6 July every year, unofficial. 2026: Monday 6 July; 2027: Tuesday 6 July. Also called World Kiss Day or International Kissing Day. Not a UN international day. Not a public holiday. Not 14 February.
Written kissing is far older than this holiday. Cuneiform from Mesopotamia describes lip-kissing in the third millennium BCE. That archaeology is about a human habit. It is not a charter for 6 July. Do not print “invented in ancient Sumer” on a July poster. The habit is old. The named day is not.
What 6 July can hold
A message, a closed-door kiss, a film, a chocolate, or nothing. Those are all compatible with the date. Public contests that treat duration as sport are someone else’s stunt; they are not the definition of the day. If you wanted a civic closing, look at a real holiday list. If you wanted Valentine’s Day, wait until February or look back, depending on the season you are in.
Check whether today’s date is 6 July in your time zone. If you meant 14 February or 13 February, you meant a different mark. If you meant a UN day, open the UN list; this title will not be there. Ask before you kiss. The calendar is not consent.
6 July is a caption. It is not a licence, and it is not a substitute for 14 February unless you want it to be. After 6 July 2026 the next date is 6 July 2027. A kiss in August is still a kiss. This is a holiday page for an unofficial July name, kept because people like a summer square for a small gesture, not because a parliament voted.
