What holiday is today, in India, is not one nationwide answer except on those three national dates. The central government also publishes gazetted and restricted holidays that offices may keep. States add their own. A bank holiday in one state can be an ordinary Tuesday in another. “Is today a holiday?” therefore needs a place name. “Is today a federal holiday?” is the wrong template; India does not use the U.S. federal list.

From Thursday, 3 September 2026, today is not Republic Day, not Independence Day, and not Gandhi Jayanti. The next of the three national holidays is Gandhi Jayanti on Friday, 2 October 2026. Republic Day 2027 is Tuesday, 26 January. Independence Day 2027 is Sunday, 15 August. Religious dates such as Diwali, Eid, and Holi move on the civil calendar and are confirmed locally; do not copy last year’s square.

India’s Republic Day, India republic day, republic of India day, and republic day for India are the same civic date: 26 January, every year. That is the Constitution date, not Independence Day.

Republic Day is 26 January, not 15 August

On 26 January 1950 the Constitution of India came into force and India became a republic. Rajendra Prasad took office as the first President. The Constituent Assembly had already adopted the Constitution on 26 November 1949; 26 January was chosen for commencement, in memory of the Poorna Swaraj (complete independence) declaration of 26 January 1930. Independence from British rule had already been marked on 15 August 1947. Republic Day does not replace Independence Day. They are two national holidays, two months, two stories.

New Delhi holds the Republic Day parade. The day is a national holiday. Schools and many offices close. It does not move to a Monday when 26 January is a Sunday; the date stays 26 January, with any substitute holiday announced separately when the government chooses to add one.

26 January — Republic Day (Constitution in force, 1950). 15 August — Independence Day (1947). 2 October — Gandhi Jayanti (Gandhi’s birthday). All other “today” answers: check the gazette for your state and year.

15 August freed the country. 26 January wrote the rulebook. Mixing the two dates is the fastest way to be precisely wrong.

How to read “today” without a wrong parade

If you are asking from outside India, convert to Indian Standard Time (UTC+5:30) before you declare the date. A late 25 January evening in New York is already 26 January in India. Republic Day will have started. The reverse is also true at the other midnight. “Today” is a time-zone word as much as a holiday word.

Restricted holidays are optional in many workplaces; gazetted holidays are the ones more offices close. Neither list is the three national days by itself. If your question was India’s Republic Day, the answer is 26 January, winter in the north of the country, every year.
