How it works

The Twentieth Amendment sets the start of the presidential and vice-presidential terms at noon on 20 January. The public oath, the speech, and the parade are how that noon is shown. They are not a second legal start. If weather, security, or a Sunday delays the outdoor program, the term still begins at noon on the 20th. Before the amendment took effect, inauguration had been 4 March. The January date is the current rule, not a tradition anyone is free to slide to a milder month.

Presidential elections run every four years. 2024 produced the 2025 noon. 2028 will produce the 2029 noon. From Thursday, 3 September 2026, that next Saturday is eight hundred and seventy days away. There is no Inauguration Day in January 2027. A midterm year seats a new Congress in early January; that is not a presidential inauguration. Do not put a countdown on 20 January 2027 and call it this holiday.

Noon on the 20th, even when the parade waits

When 20 January is a Sunday, presidents have typically taken the oath in a private Sunday ceremony so the term begins on time, then held the public inauguration on Monday the 21st. 2029 is a Saturday, not a Sunday, so that Sunday pattern does not apply unless later arrangements say so. The Saturday still starts the term at noon. Whether federal offices in Washington treat the Saturday as a holiday follows the pay and leave rules for that year, not a tourist’s wish for a three-day weekend.

Lock noon, 20 January, in a presidential year: 2025, 2029, 2033. Treat the outdoor parade as a program that can shrink or move without moving the term. If the 20th is Sunday, expect a private oath on Sunday and a public Monday, unless that year’s notice differs.

Do not invent a 2026 or 2027 presidential inauguration. Those Januaries are not presidential years. The term starts at noon even if the parade is still lining up.

A local federal holiday, not a nationwide Monday

Inauguration Day is a legal public holiday in the District of Columbia. Federal employees in Washington and often in nearby Maryland and Virginia counties have historically received it as a holiday when it falls on a weekday. It is not Thanksgiving. It is not a fifty-state close. Banks in Ohio, schools in Oregon, and shops in Texas follow ordinary January hours unless they chose otherwise. A closed museum on the Mall is a security and crowd plan. It is not a national bank holiday.

Vice-presidential and presidential oaths can be administered by different officials; the Chief Justice commonly administers the president’s oath, but the Constitution requires the oath, not a particular marble staircase. A cancelled outdoor ball does not cancel the term. A large crowd does not create a second noon. If you needed a holiday for travel, name the jurisdiction. If you needed the civic date, name 20 January 2029 and wait. 20 January 2026 was a Tuesday in an off year. It was not this day.
