In china what year is it
On the civil calendar China uses the Gregorian year: 2026. The traditional lunar year after 17 February 2026 is the Year of the Horse.
How it works
Two clocks share the same streets. Work, school, tickets, and government forms use the Gregorian year, the same numbered year used for 1 January in most of the world. Festivals, many weddings, and the animal year use the Chinese lunisolar calendar. Asking “what year is it in China” without saying which clock is how people get two true answers that look like a fight.
The Gregorian year 2026 began on 1 January. That date is winter in the north. It is the paperwork new year. The lunisolar new year, Spring Festival, began on 17 February 2026, a Tuesday. From that new moon until 5 February 2027, the animal year is the Horse. Before 17 February 2026, the animal year was still the Snake. A birthday in January 2026 is 2026 on a form and Snake on the animal cycle.
Today, 3 September 2026, both readings are already in 2026 and already in the Horse year. The civil month is September. The lunar date is in the seventh lunar month. You do not pick one and throw the other away. You pick the one the form in front of you asked for.
The Horse year and the seasonal new year
Spring Festival is the seasonal turn. It sits in late winter or the door of spring, always between about 21 January and 20 February, because it follows the second new moon after the December solstice. In 2026 that landing was 17 February. The holiday week around it is a travel season inside China: trains, family tables, and public days off arranged for that year. That week is not 1 January. 1 January is a separate civil date in midwinter, with its own (usually shorter) pause.
The twelve animals repeat. Horse years in the recent cycle include 2014 and 2002; the next Horse year after this one is 2038. 2026 is also a Fire Horse year in the sixty-year stem-and-branch pairing, written Bingwu. You do not need the stem name to date a letter. You need it if someone asks for the full traditional year, not only the animal.
National Day on 1 October is another civil marker in autumn, not a second new year. It does not change the Horse label. It does not roll the Gregorian year to 2027. Autumn 2026 is still 2026 on the form and still Horse on the cycle until February 2027.
Gregorian civil year now: 2026, since 1 January. Animal year now: Horse, since 17 February 2026. Next animal change: 6 February 2027, Goat (Sheep) year. Write 2026 on tickets and passports; write Horse only when the lunar year is what was asked.
January 1 starts the paperwork year. The Horse year starts when the new moon says spring is allowed to begin.
Which number to write
If a hotel, airline, or school wants the year, write 2026. If a relative asks “what year is it” in the sense of the animal, say Horse. If they ask whether it is still the Snake, the answer after 17 February 2026 is no. If they were born in January or early February, check the new-year date of their birth year before you assign an animal. The animal follows the lunar new year, not 1 January.
China Standard Time is UTC+8. The civil date in Beijing can already be the next calendar day while it is still the previous evening in the Americas. That can make “what year is it” look like a timezone trick on 31 December. It is not a second calendar. It is the same Gregorian date line, eight hours ahead of UTC. On 3 September 2026 that trick is idle: both sides of the Pacific are in 2026.
Do not invent a single “Chinese year number” and treat it as the official civil year. The official year on a Chinese ID, a train ticket, and a school term is the Gregorian number. The lunar year is the one that names the festival and the animal. Both are in use. They answer different questions.
