Hrs week
A week has 168 hours: seven days times twenty-four hours. Hrs week means that weekly total, or the hours you assign inside it, not a special calendar unit.
How it works
Count a week as seven midnights, or as seven times twenty-four. Either way you land on 168. That is elapsed time for a civil week that does not include a daylight-saving fold. When clocks jump in spring or fall, a local labelled week can show 167 or 169 clock-hours on the wall while 168 hours still elapse on a stopwatch. For pay and study logs, ask which of those two the rule uses.
“Hrs week” is a short label for hours per week. A timesheet that says 12 hrs week is twelve hours inside the 168, not a twelve-hour week. The week does not shrink. Your assignment inside it does. People also write hr/wk, hours/week, and “hours a week.” They are the same kind of count: a numerator of hours over a denominator of one week.
The week you mean must have a start. Some logs start Monday, some Sunday, some at a shift that crosses midnight. If two people add “hrs week” without naming the first hour, they can both be right and still disagree by a day. Write the start weekday and the time zone when the number will be checked by someone else.
168 hours and what still fits
Once 168 is on the table, every plan is a split of that pile. Sleep, work, travel, and idle time all come from the same week. Nothing extra is issued on Friday. 24 hours × 7 = 168 hours in a week. 1 hour per day = 7 hours that week.
8 hours per day for 5 days = 40 hours that week, with 128 hours still in the same week. 12 hours per day for 7 days = 84 hours, which is half of 168. Forty hours is a common workplace slot in some jobs. It is not the length of the week. Treating “a working week” as if it were 168 hours of labour is how people undercount rest. Treating 168 as if it were all available for a project is how people undercount sleep. The count is neutral. The split is the plan.
If you need hours per week from a daily figure, multiply by how many days that figure actually happens, not by seven out of habit. A class that meets three days is three times the session length, not seven. A night shift that runs four nights is four times the shift, even if the roster is printed on a seven-day grid.
Adding hours without double-counting
Name the week: start date, start time, time zone. List each block with its own start and end, not a vague “morning.” Add the lengths in minutes first if any block is not a whole hour, then divide by 60.
Do not add a day-total and a week-total of the same shifts. If a shift crosses the week’s start, put the hours on the week in which they fall, or say you are using a pay week that follows a different cut.
A week is 168 hours long even when the grid on your planner only prints the forty you get paid for. Cross-checks are simple arithmetic. Seven days of 24 cannot exceed 168 unless you counted a day twice or mixed in a second week. If your sum is 180, you have overlapping blocks or an extra day. If your sum is 20 and you thought you worked full days, you counted sessions, not days. Hrs week is a total. It gets honest when the edges of the week are written down.
