How often is leap year
A leap year arrives most often every four years, when February gets a 29th day. Century years skip that day unless they also divide by 400.
how often is leap year
The Gregorian rule is the civil rule used for dates in most of the world. A year that divides by 4 is a leap year, unless it is a century year (a year ending in 00). A century year is a leap year only when it also divides by 400. 2016, 2020, 2024, and 2028 are leap years. 2026 and 2027 are not. 2000 was a leap year. 1900 was not. 2100 will not be.
How often is a leap year, in the long run, is a little rarer than “every four years.” In each 400-year block the skipped century years remove three leap days that a raw four-year rhythm would have added. The working picture is still “usually every four years, with a century correction.” You do not need the 400-year block to plan the next February. You need it to understand why 1900 had 28 days in February and 2000 had 29.
A common year has 365 days. A leap year has 366. The extra day is 29 February, not a 32 January and not a second 28 February glued on. In a common year that square does not exist. Plans that say “the last day of February” mean the 28th in 2026 and 2027, and the 29th in 2028.
February is the month that grows
No other civil month changes length for leap day. April stays at 30. June stays at 30. November stays at 30. December stays at 31. If a countdown crosses 29 February, that countdown is one day longer than the same numbered span in a common year. If both dates sit after 1 March, leap day is already behind you and does not change the gap.
2028’s leap day is a Tuesday. 2024’s was a Thursday. Those weekdays are facts about those years. They do not repeat as a law. Do not copy Tuesday onto 2032 without looking. The next leap year after 2028 is 2032, because 2032 divides by 4 and is not a century.
Divide the year by 4. A remainder means a common year and a 28-day February. If it divides by 4 and is not a century, it is a leap year. If it is a century, divide by 400. Only then is February 29 days.
Put the extra day on 29 February, not on a random winter date you like better. Leap day is a dull extra square in late winter. Without it, spring would slowly arrive in the wrong month.
Why the extra day protects the seasons
The civil year is a count of days. The seasons follow the Earth’s path around the Sun, which does not take a round 365 days. Without leap days, named months would drift relative to winter and summer. January would, over long stretches, stop being a northern winter month. The leap rule is a correction so that December stays a northern winter month and June stays a northern summer month.
Meteorological winter in the north is December, January, and February. 29 February is the last days of that winter. Astronomical spring arrives around 20 March, so leap day still sits in astronomical winter as well. In the Southern Hemisphere February is late meteorological summer. The extra day is a late-summer square there. The same date, two seasons, one rule.
Leap day does not move International Men's Day, 1 April, or any other numbered date outside February. Those dates still fall on 19 November and 1 April. What can change is the weekday, because a leap year inserts an extra weekday before March. After 29 February, weekdays sit one step further along than they would have in a common year. Before 1 March, that extra step has not yet happened.
